I read on one of the developer's blogs a while back that the 2007.1 release was planned for November. Does anyone know when the next Gentoo release is coming out? _________________ Linux user since '94, Gentoo convert since '04 |

Code: |
emerge --sync
emerge -uDvNa world
|
Shortly after that is done. Really the number releases aren't anything you can't get the day before. _________________ Never Forget The Expat 2.0! |

That is true if your system is already installed. However, if you are just about to install Gentoo, you might not do well with an old(er) release, because it may not have support for your NIC. (You can of course use any other livecd that has support for your NIC, you don't have to wait for a Gentoo one.) _________________ If you've got nothing nice to say, you're probably not alone... |

Thanks bobber. I knew that all the individual packages in portage could all be as current before a given release as it would be the day after. I'm had just been thinking that using the most up to date release would affect the structure of the OS somehow, such as pulling in the new framebuffer (uvafb, is it called?) instead of vesafb-tng, for example. It doesnt really work that way? _________________ Linux user since '94, Gentoo convert since '04 |

Packages are being updated all the time and don't really depend on releases. AFAIK releases are mostly new stage builds (which aren't useful if you already have it installed), new livecds, and new profiles. The frame buffer stuff is handled at the kernel level which is a package (gentoo-sources, vanilla-sources, etc.) so that too is not affected by releases. |
