Hi

I’m new here (and new to Gentoo), so this may be at newbie question.

I ´ve just installed fluxbox (emerge fluxbox)
I ´ve also installed fluxspace (emerge fluxspace), iDesk (emerge iDesk) and fluxconf (emerge fluxconf)

Then I type "startx" X startup, but the screen is black :(
If I wait 2 minutes the fluxbox screen appear, but i cant use my mouse and my keyboard.

(Ctrl + alt + backspace doesn’t work)

i have tryed to "emerge unmerge fluxbox", and then again "emerge fluxbox" - but it still hangs

EDIT: It says "hostname: unknown hostname" before fluxbox starts

No idea, but posting your ~/.xinitrc would certainly be helpful.
Have you checked in /var/log/XFree86.0.log for error messages?

Hi,

I have the exact same problem, but with gnome/metacity.
When I startx, I have a black screen and I can't open a new terminal or Ctrl-Alt-Supr. I have no other choice than roughly close the computer.
I really don't know what to do

here is the /var/log/XFree86.0.log, and then the XF86Config files:
Quote:

It doesn't work, but it seems interesting.
I don't get the black screen anymore but the following error message on the screen (which is the /var/log/XFree86.à.log):

Guys,
Some improvement, or at least new behaviour:

I unmerge the nvidia drivers and got the drivers from http://www.nvidia.com.
Instead of the black screen, startx crashes, and I got the following message:

Quote:
(EE) Problem parsing the config file
(EE) Error from xf86HandleConfigFile()

Fatal server error:
no screen found

bla, bla..

XIO: fatal IO error 104 (Connection reset by peer) on X server ":0.0"
after 0 requests -0 known processed) with 0 event remainig

If I uncoment the mouse section (to get it back), I have the nvidia logo and then shity lines/colors with the mouse pointer (but can't move it) 8O

Any insight?

i got it to work again:

i´ve did this:

Code:

#updatedb
#locate X11
#locate X11R
#locate xfree
#locate XF
#locate XFree

and i removed all files that have something to do with xfree
then i:

#emerge xfree

then it was finished i typed: startx

and now it works  :)

hehe... it was the failsafe way to get it to work again. ;)

emerge unmerge xfree is not supposed to remove all these files?

Then precisely what should I remove?
All directories, subdirectories and files in:
X11
X11R
xfree
XF
XFree
or just a few of them?

Because I did emerge unmerge xfree and emerge xfree again and it doesn't work :?

Thanks

ps: I'll get that dam' X to work!

I got some great news for you.

i fall (not really) over this tread:
https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=57177&highlight=qpkg

have a look at StuBear´s answer:

Quote:

Posted: Sat May 31, 2003 3:55 am Post subject:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

To see what kde and xfree stuff you have installed try Code:
qpkg -I -g kde
and Code:
qpkg -I -g x11

This will list all installed (-I) packages in groups with kde and x11 in their name (x11-wm, x11-misc etc).

If you are happy with getting rid of all these then Code:
qpkg -I -nc -g kde | xargs emerge unmerge -p
to make sure that nothing surprising is being unmerged, then remove the -p to unmerge stuff.

Do it again with Code:
qpkg -I -nc -g kde | xargs emerge unmerge -p
.

This will remove almost everything related to kde and xfree, although it will miss stuff in net-mail, net-www etc that may be kde or X apps

Just do it with Xfree.. (X11) and then it should work 8O

The way i did it, was the hard way
