I am seeking for a open-source multi-protocol instant messenger,
with focus on security and control.

Greetings

kopete?

it offers an encryption plugin if that's what you mean by security.

I seem to remember gaim being able to do secure connections also, but I haven't used it in a while.

With kopete you can encrypt your messages with GPG-Keys and you can install net-im/kopete-otr which enables OTR encryption. OTR is very neat and it will encrypt messages automagically if your chat-partner supports it. OTR is indepent of the chat-protocol, but if you chose another IM, there is a OTR-Proxy which you can use for ICQ (I dont see it in portage right now..). Pidgin has an otr-plugin, too. And it can use some kind of "pidgin-only-encryption" (x11-plugins/pidgin-encryption). OTR ist the best way to go, imho. Miranda (Windows) and Adium (MacOSX) support it, too.

Yeah, gaim/pidgin could do it for MSN if you had GnuTLS (I only remember because I wanted to use OpenSSL rather than pulling in Yet Another SSL library, but it wouldn't :()

I really like encryption :), OTR sounds good, but with security focus i also ment
vulnerability (not primary , but overloaded applications with few control abilities may not the ones i am seeking for).

i think i will try kopete and pidgin.

Moved from Desktop Environments to Duplicate Threads in favour of What IM client do you use?. See the search functions for more threads on the topic.
