Uuuhm.... No.

That way you _will_ carry that renaming issue around all the time, that is not a solution.
It's just a stupid (sorry) workaround.

why don't you all call it what ever you want and stick it in an overlay and call it day..... let the gentoo dev's spend the next 2 months figuring this out

:)

I've got it already running in an overlay, it's not like that.

complaining about a 0-day ebuild.... crazy.

Anyway used the ebuild to install the drivers:

for an ati9800 pro

-AIGLX works
-firefox scrolling very slow.
-nice performance jump glxgears went from 4000 range to

27515 frames in 5.0 seconds = 5502.818 FPS
27724 frames in 5.0 seconds = 5544.459 FPS
27683 frames in 5.0 seconds = 5536.598 FPS

somethings flicker like glxgears, gl games run fine, anyway thanks for the ebuild!

so your telling me that masking all previous versions isn't a stupid (sorry) workaround?

my guess is that this will become a new package name... it might not be called ati-catalyst..... but a new name is the sanest thing that can be done.... probably something similar to what they did with the nvidia drivers.... ati-drivers-legacy and ati-drivers

or actually, it should be called amd-drivers ;)

Holy crap these drives kick arse. I haven't had any problems yet. I'm getting 1k more fps on glx gears...now I haven't run that test in awhile and I'm not sure what drivers I had my previous benches on but on my X300 mobility things are preforming much better.

Switched from open source drivers and got:
Code:
compiz (core) - Fatal: GLX_EXT_texture_from_pixmap is missing
compiz (core) - Error: Failed to manage screen: 0
compiz (core) - Fatal: No manageable screens found on display :0.0

What now? On 8.42.3 it was running...

try:

env LIBGL_ALWAYS_INDIRECT=1 compiz --replace ccp

http://gentoo-wiki.com/Compiz-fusion

I had the same problem that fixed it.

Masking would be even more stupid, you are right about that.
Actually that can't really be done, because AMD recommends distributors to ship
the 8.40.4 version and in addition, the current driver doesn't support firegl cards.
(Which is weird, because that is where its name came from. ;))

Either that (I like the idea of "amd-drivers", but I'm not sure, because the graphics cards are still named ATI,
so it wouldn't be "correct", but it would be a solution.) or renaming the current versions in portage.
So we have got solution 1: Bring the new driver in as "amd-drivers" or "ati-catalyst" or "amd-catalyst" or maybe as "This-really-isnt-new-drivers" :D
Solution 2: Rename the current versions in portage to 7.8.40.4 and so on. (The 7 because they were released in 2007.)
Solution 3: Rename current ati-drivers to ati-drivers-legacy

Actually I don't really like any of those solutions, but I guess I would go for solution 2.
It's actually stupid as well, but I don't really like the idea of splitting the drivers either.
I also don't like solution 3, because of the nvidia-drivers and nvidia-drivers-legacy people might think,
that their graphics card will not be supported by drivers anymore.

As I said, I don't really like any of those solutions.
Well, we'll see what the maintainer prefers. ;)

Really unusefull release...
I still have the x800 fan issue (here) and lockup switching between X and console. These are not minor bugs...

Well, at least they have changed drivers numeration... :wink:

Now I've got:
Code:
paatos@blah ~ $ env LIBGL_ALWAYS_INDIRECT=1 compiz --replace ccp
compiz (core) - Fatal: No valid GL extensions string found.
compiz (core) - Error: Failed to manage screen: 0
compiz (core) - Fatal: No manageable screens found on display :0.0

compare your xorg.conf with Impalatore-polacco's:

Code:
http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-p-4529771.html#4529771

perhaps some important part is missing in yours (e.g. aiglx "on" in serverflags is missing)

You may try downgrading to xorg-server 1.3, it helped me get it running...

I read somewhere that in xorg 1.4 introducted some new memory management system (or something along that line) that is buggy and pisses off AIGLX.....

however I notied the other day there were no more 1.2 or 1.3 ebuilds in portage, so it looks like we are suck unless you want to rename the ebuild

IMHO this is not true with the new drivers:
Code:

 * You have selected support for the SLUB allocator. Suspending is
 * known to be broken with this allocator and ati-drivers. If you
 * need support for Suspend-To-Ram or Suspend-To-Disk, select SLAB
 * instead. To do this enable CONFIG_SLAB and disable CONFIG_SLUB
 * in /usr/src/linux/.config or select
 *       General setup  --->
 *          Choose SLAB allocator (SLUB)  --->
 *             (X) SLAB
 * in 'menuconfig'
>>> Done pkg_setup

There were reports from the Phoronix Forums, that it is still a problem, I think.
Good to here, that it works now at least in some places.

On the other side: Is there a real solution to fix the watermark problem on the right bottom of the screen?

OH NOEZ :lol:
Code:
 * Rebuild x11-base/xorg-server without USE=nptl
 * or AIGLX (compiz, etc.) will not work.
 * This is because of a bug in the Mesa NPTL assembly code
 * in all Mesa 7.0.x versions (Mesa 6.x is OK).

rebuilded[/code] without -nptl and now AIGLX works :)

Do you mean a real watermark or the screen corruption?
A watermark shouldn't appear, since the signature file gets installed.
For the screen corruptions there is a work around, you can prevent that to appear with an option in xorg.conf.
Look at the messages of the ebuild, it is included there.
Again only ATI/AMD can _really_ fix this.

I get this error with compiz:

Code:
compiz (core) - Fatal: No GLXFBConfig for default depth, this isn't going to work.
