I have an usb cdrw (acer) which I would really like to be able to use as a burner again. I have never been able to get any cd burning software to find it. I can use it as a normal cd-rom (/dev/cdroms/cdrom1 or something like that...not at my home computer right now). Does anyone have suggestions about this?

You could try using SCSI emulation.
Back in the days when I had a burner, I just compiled the option in my kernel and added "hdX=ide-scsi" in my lilo.conf .. that was a long time ago, not sure about it now.

Another option is using ATAPI burning, I have no experience in this area though. Try using google :)

I thought the info from /proc/scsi might be helpful.
Code:
root@wrynn-01 scsi # more /proc/scsi
Attached devices:
Host: scsi1 Channel: 00 Id: 00 Lun: 00
Vendor: LEXAR    Model: DIGITAL FILM     Rev: /W1.
Type:   Direct-Access                    ANSI SCSI revision: 02
Host: scsi2 Channel: 00 Id: 00 Lun: 00
  Vendor: MiniRW   Model: CD-R/RW 6X4X24   Rev: C.IN
Type:   CD-ROM                           ANSI SCSI revision: 02

As shown, the burner is connected and running w/ scsi emulation. The problem I am still having is getting cdrecord to acknowledge the burner's existance. How do I go about telling cdrecord where it is?

I'm using a lite-on USB cd-rw drive to burn cds. I updated cdrtools to version 2.01 alpha (it was masked a couple weeks ago when I did this). After that I didn't have problems with any cd recording software finding the drive. I haven't used cdrecord from the command line, only GUI interfaces so far, but it's my understanding that the progs I have been working with use cdrecord.

I updated to the latest and greatest version of cdrtools (I believe 2.01 alpha 14). Still unable to detect. Do I need to use any options to tell cdrecord where the drive is? I currently have been doing
Code:
cdrecord -scanbus
