miso5,
You may use any liveCD that works with your hardware to install Gentoo. The 2007.0 Gentoo liveCD was made about April 2007. If you were to install the binaries from that, your install would be 9 months old. When you do an emerge --sync to get the current portage tree, then build packages, such as the kernel, you get todays kernel.
This means that while the Gentoo 2007.0 liveCD will not work for you, your installed Gentoo will be fine, as it will be as up to date as your last Code: | emerge --sync
emerge world -uDN |

Installing Gentoo with a Knoppix LiveCD is pretty easy. |

Well today is the last day to release 2007.1.
To all you who have '2007.1' in ur signature - where did you get x86 / i686 2007.1 ? I didnt find it in the mirrors
Or does just gentoo that emerged -e system after date > * count as 2007.1 ? |

don't get hung up on releases when dealing with Gentoo
Gentoo is updated every time you run an emerge --sync && emerge world
EVEN if they did release a CD now you would be more uptodate then the CD/tarball
all the profile does is sets the minimum package version for some packages and defaults _________________

True, but in this case there is more: there are just too many C2D systems which are not supported by 2007.0. People can't install Gentoo using the normal methods. That sucks. Other than that, versions don't matter. _________________ Paludis, the way packages are meant to be managed. |

really? my C2D system installed nicely with present medium. That asside updated stageballs are a MUST!!! esp due to the expat dormat issue that lies within the present balls
To install atm you can use the systemrescue LiveCD (an extreamly good & small liveCD) and DRobbins stage3 tarballs _________________

he rolled them, he can call them what he likes.
That said there is no 2007.1 profile in the tree yet
Code: |
j@Fluid ~ $ ls /usr/portage/profiles/default-linux/amd64/
2006.0 ChangeLog package.mask parent virtuals
2006.1 dev package.use.force profile.bashrc vserver
2007.0 make.defaults package.use.mask use.mask
|
make no difference to me. I have a stable working system and I have the means to install gentoo if I need to _________________

There have been many problems with the JMicron controller used on various C2D mainboards. And such things are really annoying for beginners - we shouldn't have to tell them to use another LiveCD for installing Gentoo, it's just embarrassing. We all know that there aren't such things as 'Gentoo releases', but LiveCDs should always be up to date to support a majority of systems. |

I agree to some extent and that is why the liveCD and stageballs need to be updated. Its a shame that the release team said that there was going to be a 2007.1 release
They should go back to version numbers (or even release names) as opose to date-implying names then ppl won't be going "its nearly the end of 2007, where is 2007.1" or in a couple of days the expected "its 2008, where is the 2008 release"
THIS IS GENTOO NOT UBUNTU!!! _________________

He created them, because he was the creator of Gentoo, so I think that he can build a Stage 3 profile 2007.1 without any problem. In fact, maybe he can created also a 2007.1 LiveCD before the Gentoo dev.
That's weird in fact... |

Yeah, Daniel Robbins is Gentoo, he has the spirit of Gentoo running all on himself. He is making a good job investing time on creating new stages, I really appreciate that effort. Myself I'm not worried of new releases, just new stage tarballs, since that makes your life easier if you ever have to reinstall. _________________ Gentoo: Gigabyte: nFORCE 2: nVIDIA GeForce 6600: AMD Athlon XP 3200+

Kensai,
Gentoo was started by drobbins but it was out of his individual control (even direction) a long time before he left the project.
Gentoo is whatever the Gentoo community makes it. Community means everyone who contributes and uses it.
drobbins is one of many members of the Gentoo community. I'm not belittling his contribution, only casting it into perspective - he has the advantage of knowing Gentoo better than most of us.
To make the point, there is no "us" and "them" in the Gentoo community, only "we". _________________ Regards,

Hehe, I knew this would make somebody mad. LOL. I meant in the sense that he is the man, becuase of his contribution with the stages. I know all about the history of drobbins, how he got broke because of Gentoo how he worked for MS and how he led MS to do some crazy things never before seen in favor of Linux, though very little to notice, and how he is now working for E*trade a company known to run Gentoo Linux.
But drobbins is the man right now, sorry about the he is Gentoo, he is the man was what I meant.
PS: I love your signature, I fall on the second group, seriously. _________________ Gentoo: Gigabyte: nFORCE 2: nVIDIA GeForce 6600: AMD Athlon XP 3200+

Maybe we (the Gentoo community) accept the work of DR and also we should accept his 2007.1 tarball has the official release from the dev team.
If he can do it by himself, with not use them ?
This will give some air and also some time to the dev team to concentrate on other things
Maybe I'm wrong, but I think that this is a good idea. |

THAT would be great (and I would love it \o/, gonna be using his stage3 tarball this weekend as a basis of my liveUSB)
HOWEVER... there is this nasty thing called "politics" and there was alot of bad blood when DRobbins came back last time (I won't mention between whom, but he still has too much influence )
And while Neddy is right that Gentoo is a community and there are more users then dev's, the dev's kinds dictate the route that is taken for most things. So unless a or some dev's just swallow pride and do what is for the greater good it aint gonna happen _________________

Well, I just took a look over at the releng project page and what I see looks kinda good. Apparently the next release is going to be 2007.1 and it looks like there's still a chance that it might be released in November. |
