failed to start the x server on a new install with live cd

Hello all, this is my first foray into gentoo; I'm familiar with ubuntu and want to really get familiar with linux. Im trying to install from a livecd (downloaded from this mirror: ftp://lug.mtu.edu/gentoo/releases/x86/2007.0/livecd ) my computer is a compac evo n620c specs- http://arstechnica.com/reviews/hardware/compaq-evo.ars .

following this guide - http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/handbook-x86.xml?part=1&chap=2 - once i get to the gentoo linux 2007.0 screen i end up with the error message in a gray box with blue screen "failed to start the X server (your graphical interface). It is likely that it is not set up correctly. Would you like to view the X server output to diagnose the problem?"

on yes i get these error messages at the bottom of the text:

dlopen: /usr/lib/xorg/modules/extensions/libGLcore.so: undefined symbol:
(EE) Faied to load /usr/lib/xorg/modules/extensions/libGLcore.so: undefined symbol
(EE) Failed to load module :GLcore" (loader failed, 7)
(EE) Failed to load module "ati" (module does not exist, 0)
(EE) No Drivers available.

Fatal server error:
no screens found

if there is any other important information I need to include let me know. Its possible this is a very basic problem that I just don't know how to solve so don't think any response is too elementary.

I would recommend that you use the minimal CD and either print out the installation handbook or have it available on another computer.

Hi pittsburgh,
Welcome to Gentoo.
I agree with Shiny-Things,don't use the gui installer,it sucks.
No need for another computer.
With ctrl-alt-F1-6 you have enough consoles to do
the install on one and read the manual online using links
on another.

To install Gentoo I use sysrescuecd.Based on Gentoo,has firefox to browse Gentoo docs and mc to browse (and edit) files.
The same disk can be used for 32 and 64 bit installs.
You can follow the Handbook verbatim.

Hi,

I believe if you edit the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file and find the line where it looks for the ati driver and replace it with vesa, you will be able to start up your x.

driver="ati" should be driver="vesa"

I had the same problem two days ago and that fixed it for me.

find if xinit is installed with eix xinit
hope you have made xdm default
also check if xf86-input mouse and evdev
xinit should start x
