Hi ,
Most of israel internet users use adsl connecton . For connection to our provider we use pptp protocol . All time that i install gentooo , i must compile this packet on some other computer , put it in my "win" partition, during gentoo installation copy it from "win" . I think it will be good idea add this packet to installation cd , or stage1/stage2 .

If you can read Hebrew, I've posted an article at whatsup.org.il describing how I've done it using gentoo's boot cd and the pptp binaries and some more libs.
It was written for Gentoo1.0 but I'm sure it still valid for later versions.
The article also describes why I've chosen Gentoo and how it compares to other distros.
It'll be great if pptp binary shows up on the installation cd. _________________ There's someone in my head but it's not me - Pink Floyd |

Great, nice to know.
I think Gentoo gained several converts here in Israel because of that article, I'm glad , Maybe I'll revise, to keep it up to date (if I'll have several spare years ). _________________ There's someone in my head but it's not me - Pink Floyd |

I think we can prepare ebuilds and all other required data and send it to developers for using in next release. _________________ <-( LiNuXpAsHa )-> |

What's upgrading the modem has to do with it
He's talking about ADSL, which in Israel uses pptp (unlike pppoe used in most of the world).
pptp isn't provided on the installation cd, hence the request from linuxpasha.
Maybe this thread is better suited for "Gentoo Suggestions" Instead of "All Things Gentoo", up to the moderators to decide. _________________ There's someone in my head but it's not me - Pink Floyd |

You have no idea what u're talking about huh?
We need the ppp* to authenticate with the ISP. _________________ All for one and one for All

off to gentoo suggestions we go. someone probably wants to file a feature request on bugs.gentoo.org. Since you've already suggested it, accompanying ebuilds will likely increase the overall chance of this getting included.

In that case, where the authentication to your isp (uname/pass) ? The gateway can't be the modem, tt must the address assigned by your ISP.
I suggest you read HOWTO-ADSL-BEZEQ. Maybe your talking about USB modems instead of ethernet ones _________________ There's someone in my head but it's not me - Pink Floyd |

Folks -- by posting issues here, in the public forum, we allow others to learn from our experiences (and mistakes).
Just a thought.

This is only for alcatel modems (I for one don't use them), and seems quite error prone.
Using pptp looks a lot easier and no need for modem hacks.
Also if you follow the steps in the guide, the modem becomes the router/firewall. I prefer to use the computer as the router as I use port forwarding to different machines on different ports on the network and as a firewall. I'd like to keep this features (ain't iptables great ).
I sure can see some user's wanting this, but i think pptp binary should be present on gentoo's install cd. I'll look into providing an ebuild in the near future (unless someone beats me to it ). _________________ There's someone in my head but it's not me - Pink Floyd |

Just a sidenote: The topic isn't really accurate (Hoalland and several other countries also need PPTP for logging in to ADSL).
Further, I have already posted a bug about this. It's bug# 1028 on BugZilla. It's currently assigned to verwilst@gentoo.org (Bart Verwilst) check https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1028. |
