I got a new scanner and that for I tried updating my kernel by genkernel.
And I tried it, like I always did:
Code:

genkernel --menuconfig all

But this time I got a rather strange message
Code:

* Gentoo Linux Genkernel; Version 3.4.9_pre7
* Running with options: --menuconfig all

* Linux Kernel 2.6.23-gentoo-r1 for x86...
* kernel: >> Running mrproper...
* ERROR: Failed to compile the "mrproper" target...

* -- Grepping log... --

Makefile:492: /usr/src/linux-2.6.23-gentoo-r1/arch/x86/Makefile: No such file or directory
make: *** No rule to make target `/usr/src/linux-2.6.23-gentoo-r1/arch/x86/Makefile'.  Stop.
* Gentoo Linux Genkernel; Version 3.4.9_pre7
* Running with options: --menuconfig all

* ERROR: Failed to compile the "mrproper" target...

Well the error itself doesn't surprise me. I mean, there is no folder arch/x86/ only arch/x86_64.
But why tries genkernel using that folder. Shouldn't genkernel in default detect my system and choose the right arch?
This is not my first kernel I compile with genkernel, but I never had such a message before.
Maybe I missed an update at /etc/genkernel.conf?

Regards Florian

A similar problem was solved in this thread:

Hope it works out for you

I'm not sure how genkernel works, but it may be confused due to recent changes in the kernel itself.

Up to kernel 2.6.23*, you will find arch/i386/ and arch/x86_64/ separately.
Starting with kernel 2.6.24-rc1, these have been merged into arch/x86/ for both 32bits and 64bits.

So it could be cause of the latest genkernel version I've installed.
I will try downgrading genkernel or explicit add arch=i386 to the genkernel.conf config file.

thanks Florian

This problem is caused by genkernel.
Downgrade your genkernel from 3.4.9_pre9 to 3.4.8 will solve this problem.
