Recently I upgraded from gcompris-8.2.2 to gcompris-8.4.2. After the up-gradation, I do not get sound for gcompris. The gcompris.net says that sdl_mixer is replaced by gstreamer. I have gstreamer already installed on the machine. What else should I look at to get the sound?

hi Cheran

I had the same issue... You helped me because i did not notice gstreamer was needed.
I installed gstreamer10 [I don't know the gentoo version name because I switched to Archlinux] but it did not work...
I had to add the gstreamer-ogg and the gstreamer-vorbis pluggins to make it work!!
The sound in gcompris is made of ogg files.

Hi Serge,
Thanks for the reply. Following your suggestion, I emerged gst-plugins-ogg and gst-plugins-vorbis and I have got my sound back in Gcompris. However, I wonder why ogg and vorbis were not enabled automatically in gstreamer as I have set use flags "ogg" and "vorbis" in my /etc/make.conf

Despite having plugins for ogg and vorbis, I could not get all the sounds in gcompris. I guess it was because audio/x-wav files could not be played by gstreamer. To get the missing sounds and voices, I had also to emerge media-libs/gst-plugins-good.

I had to add the gst-plugins-alsa package to finally get it to work

emerge gst-plugins-base -- no sound
emerge media-libs/gst-plugins-good -- no sound
emerge gst-plugins-ogg -- no sound
emerge gst-plugins-vorbis -- sound works!

Update from yesterday... It seems that to just have sound effects, all you need is gst-plugins-good (all all it's dependency's). For music you need both gst-plugins-ogg and gst-plugins-vorbis.

Thank you mikegpitt! (And my kids thank you also.)

Have you entered a bug for this in https://bugs.gentoo.org ?

I know versions > 6.5.3-r1 are still marked "unstable", but the author of the ebuild should get the dependencies straightened out.

If can not or do not want to enter a bug, reply back and I will enter a bug.

Thanks again!

I added the bug to bugzilla with an updated ebuild:

It looks like the issue has been fixed with gcompris 8.4.5. I haven't verified it however:
