Hi there, I've happily been booting using a framebuffer to display a nice high res wallpaper with a scroll bar whilst the system boots. I've noticed today (I think after the latest upgrade for xorg-server) that my system now boots into tty1 and doesnt change to tty7 where I believe KDE resides... Pressing Alt+Ctrl+ F7 changes to the X window system and then all is well but obviously I would like this to be automated as it was before. Does anyone have any ideas on where I should look to do this?

I have added exec startkde using the following line as recommended in the HOWTO

echo "exec startkde" > ~/.xinitrc

my inittab is as follows:

Code:

# Default runlevel.
id:5:initdefault:

# System initialization, mount local filesystems, etc.
si::sysinit:/sbin/rc sysinit

# Further system initialization, brings up the boot runlevel.
rc::bootwait:/sbin/rc boot

l0:0:wait:/sbin/rc shutdown
l1:S1:wait:/sbin/rc single
l2:2:wait:/sbin/rc nonetwork
l3:3:wait:/sbin/rc default
l4:4:wait:/sbin/rc default
l5:5:wait:/sbin/rc default
l6:6:wait:/sbin/rc reboot
#z6:6:respawn:/sbin/sulogin

# TERMINALS
c1:12345:respawn:/sbin/agetty 38400 tty1 linux
c2:2345:respawn:/sbin/agetty 38400 tty2 linux
c3:2345:respawn:/sbin/agetty 38400 tty3 linux
c4:2345:respawn:/sbin/agetty 38400 tty4 linux
c5:2345:respawn:/sbin/agetty 38400 tty5 linux
c6:2345:respawn:/sbin/agetty 38400 tty6 linux

# SERIAL CONSOLES
#s0:12345:respawn:/sbin/agetty 9600 ttyS0 vt100
#s1:12345:respawn:/sbin/agetty 9600 ttyS1 vt100

# What to do at the "Three Finger Salute".
ca:12345:ctrlaltdel:/sbin/shutdown -r now

# Used by /etc/init.d/xdm to control DM startup.
# Read the comments in /etc/init.d/xdm for more
# info. Do NOT remove, as this will start nothing
# extra at boot if /etc/init.d/xdm is not added
# to the "default" runlevel.
x:a:once:/etc/X11/startDM.sh

rc-update show is as follows:

Code:
               acpid |      default
           bluetooth |      default
            bootmisc | boot
             checkfs | boot
           checkroot | boot
               clock | boot
         consolefont | boot
               cupsd |      default
                dbus |      default
               dhcpd |      default
             distccd |      default
             dnsmasq |      default
               drqmd |      default
                hald |      default
              hdparm | boot
            hostname | boot
            in.tftpd |      default
               ivman |      default
             keymaps | boot
               local |      default nonetwork
          localmount | boot
             modules | boot
            net.eth0 |      default
              net.lo | boot
            netmount |      default
                 nfs |      default
      readahead-list | boot
 readahead-list-earl | boot
           rmnologin | boot
               samba |      default
                sshd |      default
             urandom | boot
                 xdm |      default

This configuration used to work and I dont know why it's broken now.

I have the following in /etc/conf.d/xdm
Code:

# We always try and start X on a static VT. The various DMs normally default
# to using VT7. If you wish to use the xdm init script, then you should ensure
# that the VT checked is the same VT your DM wants to use. We do this check to
# ensure that you have't accidently configured something to run on the VT
# in your /etc/inittab file so that you don't get a dead keyboard.
CHECKVT=7

# What display manager do you use ?  [ xdm | gdm | kdm | entrance ]
# NOTE: If this is set in /etc/rc.conf, that setting will override this one.
DISPLAYMANAGER="kdm"

Hi Thommy,

check in you /usr/kde/3.5/share/config/kdm/kdmrc (path may vary) the [General] section. I have attached mine in this thread. I think the ServerVTs option should do the trick. I hope so.

Code:

[General]
ConfigVersion=2.3
ConsoleTTYs=tty1,tty2,tty3,tty4,tty5,tty6
PidFile=/var/run/kdm.pid
ReserveServers=:1,:2,:3
ServerVTs=-7
StaticServers=:0

Cheers
Tom

Hi tom, unfortuantely I seem to already have the same configuration:

Code:
[General]
ConfigVersion=2.3
ConsoleTTYs=tty1,tty2,tty3,tty4,tty5,tty6
PidFile=/var/run/kdm.pid
ReserveServers=:1,:2,:3
ServerVTs=-7
StaticServers=:0

Any other ideas why this could be happening?

Hi,

I have exactly the same problem and I have not found any solution at this time.

I have just notice this: if you press F2 when your system boot and is displaying the progress bar to go in "verbose mode", then your kdm will always start correctly. But if you let the progress bar until kdm try to start, then the problem appear...

I'm still waiting for a solution.

Solution:
In /etc/conf.d/splash there is:
SPLASH_EFFECTS="fadein,fadeout"

Removing fadeout solved my problem. Hope it helps.

I might have the same problem, but this solution did not fix the problem.
