Hi,

Been running rc4 for about a month.

Over the last week I have had serious issues with ftp when trying to emerge packages

1. I receive an error message about ftp server failure server disconnect message.

2. Added practically every gentoo mirror into my make.conf

3. Problem just comes and goes.

4. cd'ed to /usr and did an rm -rf on portage.

5. When I use ftp downloads through my web browser its fines
and I downloaded a new portage snapshot (june 12) and extracted it in
the usual location

6. no when I try to emerge something I get the following error message.

!!! No profile directory; system mode unavailable.

7. Right now I am running an emerge-webrsync just to see if that will fix the
problem.

8. I have the appropriate proxy env var sets also for proxy because I am behind a proxy.

This is really starting to frustrate me and I love gentoo. I come from the BDS (Free/Net/Open), and I still dig them but for workstations gentoo flat out rocks.

did u upgrade your portage since installing by 'emerge sync', 'emerge -u portage' (or system or world)? u should have the following in your make.conf:

Code:

# SYNC is the server used by rsync to retrieve a localized rsync mirror
#     rotation. This allows you to select servers that are geographically
#     close to you, yet still distribute the load over a number of servers.
#     Please do not single out specific rsync mirrors. Doing so places undue
#     stress on particular mirrors.  Instead you may use one of the following
#     continent specific rotations:
#
#   Default:       "rsync://rsync.gentoo.org/gentoo-portage"
#   North America: "rsync://rsync.namerica.gentoo.org/gentoo-portage"
#   South America: "rsync://rsync.samerica.gentoo.org/gentoo-portage"
#   Europe:        "rsync://rsync.europe.gentoo.org/gentoo-portage"
#   Asia:          "rsync://rsync.asia.gentoo.org/gentoo-portage"
#   Australia:     "rsync://rsync.au.gentoo.org/gentoo-portage"
SYNC="rsync://rsync.europe.gentoo.org/gentoo-portage"

Nope I will add it though.

Here is what is really wacke out though.

Now all of a sudden everything is running fine.

I have a strange feeling that it is networking issue with the proxy servers on
the corporate network.

Because now everything is going fine. Problem is this happens all the time it seems
lately.

I think it may have 'fixed itself' because the new /etc/make.conf that comes with the latest portage switched the default ftp program from 'wget' to 'wget -t 5 --passive-ftp \${URI} -P \${DISTDIR}'

Maybe the passive option helped?

Pythonhead,

I always download a snapshot from one of the mirrors. I don't have that in make.conf right now.

I try doing a emerge-webrsync but it seems to take fscking for ever and I am on a gigE backbone with a 7meg pipe to the world.

Hmmmm.

So it looks like when you grab a snapshot thats not included?

Only via a emerge-webrsync or emerge sync?

Its fscking happening right now! I even add the FETCHCOMMAND to make.conf for
passive ftp/wget.

Its must have something to with connections limit to the proxy ???
shit.

Through whole 18 hour period I get this and two times I could emerge an ebuild
without this happning.

u mention that u grabed the latest portage snapshot and installed it - do u talk about the cvs version? did u try to install it using 'emerge portage' - or does this not work because of your problems?

try to use the latest stable version if u do not already... make sure that everything in /etc is up to date.

you should not just remove portage manually - if u emerge it - the new one will be installed and if that is successful the old one will be removed...
