For some reason nvidia drivers, nvidia-drivers-100.14.09 and nvidia-drivers-100.14.19 prevents viewing of the shell when active. With nvidia drivers nvidia-drivers-1.0.9639 everything is normal. This appears to be a bug, but I am unsure how to register it.

Here are my emerge info.

Code:

Can you explain what do you mean "viewing of the shell" ??

Do you have 20+ video cards in your computer ?
Code:
VIDEO_CARDS="nvidia vesa fbdev"

This is enough if you have only one video card.

You can use the nvidia-bug-report.sh program to report bugs to Nvidia. The program generates a file that you email to Nvidia along with a description of the bug. Probably best to install the buggy driver before running it. The quickpkg program along with emerge -k can make switching versions much faster than full re-emerges. I suggest using the --include-config=y option for the quickpkg program.

No, I don't have vesa video card. I have no idea why this is there, since I did not set it. When using grapich I can switch to the shell with Ctrl+alt+F1 (or F2, F3 etc..).

I am not sure that is registers as a bug (?) but the shell goes out of vertical and horizontal sync.

Few things:

-There was an old nvidia bug crashing X when switching VT (shell). As far as I know it was fixed long ago.
-You need to fix your configuration of video (make.conf and xorg.conf).
-Check also that your keyboard is set correctly - not sure if you can switch but cannot see VT or Ctrl-Alt-F1 does not respond.

Check the log of X in /var/log/Xorg.0.log or /var/log/Xorg.0.log.old if you had to reboot after crash.

This doesn't crash X, the shell just becomes unusable (out of sync) with the newer nvidia drivers. My keyboard is is-latin1, that has been working fine. Far as I know, there is nothing wrong with my xorg.conf file and my make.conf file. Why I have old vesa settings there is a mystery to me, but I don't know where to remove it.

See my first post.... that line needs to be set in /etc/make.conf

What card do you have ?

Found few similar pb tread, but not clear solution, except stay with the older driver. Do you need the newer ones ?

I can use the older driver as long they are in the portage. I just mask the new onces if they fail. This does not freeze my computer, but makes the shell unusable.

Thanks for the threads on the nvidia forum. :)

With nvidia driver 96.43.01 everything is working as normal. So anyone having this same issue should use that driver.

Hi jonfr,
https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-572924-highlight-.html
This will tell you more.
I am having the same problem.
I keep my fingers crossed for the 1.0.9639 drivers remaining in portage.
Gerard.
