It took me a day or so to get through all the merges, but I just finished installing Gentoo 1.3b (with optimized KDE) on a Pentium 3 500MHz with 256MB of RAM. The install went almost flawlessly thanks thanks to a great tip in the GCC 3 forum about a make.default file that seems to have been left out of the 1.3b tarball.
It's been just a few hours but things seem very stable. Time will tell. Most of all, this machine is very fast again. I can hardly tell the difference between it and my everyday work machine which is an Athlon 1200MHz with 512MB of RAM.
Stunning work guys. Thanks

Gladly. It's the 1.3b Stage 1 emerge error thread at
https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=5877
I bet it's been fixed by now though.
