Hi,

I configured the kernel 2.4.18 and installed it.

Now gentoo complains about not having devfs included into
the kernel.

In the menuconfig I really can not find devfs.

I edited .config to say CONFIG_DEVFS_FS yes
But afer make dep, make bzImage does not compile
complaining that theres an error with devfs.

My questions:

a) how can I disable the gentoo-bootup-error about devfs?

or

b) how can I enable devfs in the kernel

Thank you!

From the Gentoo Linux 1.1a Installation Instructions:

Quote:
Warning: For your kernel to function properly, there are several options that you will need to ensure are in the kernel proper -- that is, they should be enabled and not compiled as modules. You will need to enable the "Code maturity level options --> Prompt for development and/or incomplete code/drivers" option to see several of these selections. Under the "File systems" section, be sure to enable the "Device File System" (note that you don't need to enable the "/dev/pts file system support" option). You'll also need to enable the "Virtual Memory Filesystem". Be sure to enable "ReiserFS" if you have any ReiserFS partitions; the same goes for "Ext3". If you're using XFS, enable the "SGI XFS filesystem support" option. It's always a good idea to leave ext2 enabled whether you are using it or not. Also, most people using IDE hard drives will want to enable the "USE DMA by default" option; otherwise, your IDE drives may perform very poorly. Of course, remember to enable "IDE disk" support as well -- otherwise your kernel won't be able to see your IDE disks.

My guess is you forgot to enable the "prompt for development and/or incomplete code/drivers" option.

Thank you for this hint! You are right!

But behind /dev file support there I can read EXPERIMENTAL...

is /dev file support really neccessary? I just and only want
to run a LAMPS - Server.

And I'm now frightened about the quote "EXPERMIENTAL".

I already installed LAMPS and it works fine...

No, it's not necessary. I wouldn't worry too much, however, about the "EXPERIMENTAL" tag in the kernel config screen. Lots of people have been using devfs for a while now -- most of the serious bugs have been worked out. Besides, "EXPERIMENTAL" is something of a misnomer in the kernel menu -- the ones you really want to stay away from are marked "DANGEROUS" :)

If, however, you're happy with the way your server is running now and it's doing everything you need it to do, then there's certainly no reason you have to muck around with it. (If it ain't broken...)

Hi,

again thank you very much for your help.

One thing I just want to say. I am using SuSE Linux
since about 1999 just for LAMPS and non-x11/KDE
things.

This weekend I setted up Gentoo! It is great!
Really! 100 Points for such a transparent and
lightweight system!

Please continue this perfect system!!!!!!!!
