I have a rather strange problem with my bootsplash. I'm using the Livecd-2007 theme (but the problem happens to all themes)

For some reason the theme wants to fade in and fade out during the beginning and the end of the boot process.... for some reason this fading out is hanging X unless I hit F2 (which lets me see all the modules loading.)

I originally had this setting so that it would which to F2 automatically and thus not hang... but I do not know what settings now need to be changed.
(maybe "silent" needs to be changed to something else?)

Here is my grub.conf:

default 0
timeout 30

title=Gentoo Linux 2.6.22-r8
root (hd0,1)
kernel /boot/kernel-2.6.22-gentoo-r8 root=/dev/hda3 splash=silent,theme:livecd-2007.0 video=vesafb:1024x768-32@60,mtrr,ywrap quiet CONSOLE=/dev/tty1
initrd /boot/fbsplash-livecd-2007.0-1024x768

Change the "splash=silent,..." to "splash=verbose,...".
Also, if you want kernel messages, remove the "quiet" before the "CONSOLE" setting.

Yes thank you I was aware of the "verbose" setting but I was hoping that there was some kind of variable opposite to "fadein" that might solve the problem a little more gracefully. Verbose does work, thank you but I was hoping to have an alternate setting.

I had an issue with a fading splash, the only thing that cured it in the end was a total power off, I beleive that there was some kind of firmware issue (BIOS or other) that was causing it, as a simeple restart didn't help.

I might be wrong, but try shutting down, then kill power to computer (pull power lead or whatever), the start-up again and check.

Cheers,

Well the problem does not go away after a shutdown or poweroff. For some reason, even though the fadein variable in not specified, the bootsplash still fades in.

Had a similar problem.
In /etc/conf.d/splash there is:
SPLASH_EFFECTS="fadein,fadeout"

Removing fadeout solved my problem. Hope it helps.

I also have that problem on my Gentoo gaming machine. While removing the fadeout effect fixes the issue, it doesn't actually fix the cause of the issue. IMHO getting rid of the fadeout effect will probably result in a majority of machines to never use it, making fade out mostly useless :(.

I'd like to know how this issue could actually be fixed. Maybe by decreasing the fade out duration? (I find the fade effect sooooo slow at times.) Is it possible to make X start a little later and wait till fbcondecor fade out effect is over?

File a bug?

Removing fadeout solved my problem as well. TBH I couldn't care less about the console splash fading out, I just want X to be up and running as quickly as possible so I can use my computer.

I feel the same, but it's nice to have the option I guess.

I think it should default to off maybe, especially as it's causing so many issues :wink:

If a boot service fails it may also cause the screen to revert back to the console from gdm/kdm if using fbcondecor. I experienced this problem when the ntp-client service failed during boot. This may be a problem being experienced by some. To stop this from occurring you can change SPLASH_VERBOSE_ON_ERRORS="yes" to SPLASH_VERBOSE_ON_ERRORS="no" in /etc/conf.d/splash.

Of course doing this also means that you don't get notified if critical boot processes fail.

Hope this helps :)

This solved the problem for me. But I didn't think of that, the error message is long before the Xserver got started.

But THX
