Posting this as solved right off in case anyone else happens to run into this.

The problem:
Code:
# passwd username
Changing password for username
Enter the new password (minimum of 5, maximum of 127 characters)
Please use a combination of upper and lower case letters and numbers.
New password:
/usr/lib/cracklib_dict.pwd: No such file or directory
PWOpen: Illegal seek

I got this after
Code:
# emerge -uD world

Updated to cracklib today.

Found this thread searching the forums:
https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-346949-highlight-cracklibdict.html

I'll save readers time, do:
Code:
# emerge cracklib-words

Have a day! :-|

Just a dump question...

Shouldn't "sys-apps/shadow" with useflag "cracklib"
Code:
sys-apps/shadow-4.0.18.1-r1  USE="cracklib nls pam -nousuid (-selinux) -skey"
depend on "sys-libs/cracklib" and pull in that packed?

regards
blubbi

I've found also another solution to this problem - you have to generate that file using the following command:
Code:

create-cracklib-dict /usr/share/dict/*

Peter.

Emerging cracklib-words worked for me. Is this a missing dependency?
