Finding and removing fetched packages?

Say I fetched a few more packages than I actually want installed. How would I find these packages if I didn't remember their names, and can I just delete the tarball from the portage directory?

It's safe to delete the files in /usr/portage/distfiles/

Safe but discouraged. It's better to keep distfiles for installed packages and remove the rest.
