PostPosted: Wed Sep 26, 2007 1:05 am    Post subject: Keyboard issues - works for root, not user [SOLVED] Reply with quote

A couple hours ago I (against my better judgement) emerged kdebase-meta and kdebase-startkde. And something "funny" happened.

Now I can't use my alt-gr any more. Nor the windows key or the menu key (or windows menu... dunno how it's called). I can't even use Ctrl-Alt-FN for VT switching. Apparently this is not limited to X as alt-gr refuses to work outside it. VT switching however works fine outside X. I tried some things as ... changing and rechanging the XkbLayout option in xorg.conf, editing /etc/conf.d/keymaps (windowkeys="yes"), changing my locale settings...

This is getting annoying and as much as I'd like to blame KDE... I don't think it's its fault.

*edit* I also just noticed my locale gets reset after every reboot from
sl_SI.UTF-8 to POSIX

*edit2* all works fine for root... just every user seems to be borked.

Bumperstickers are nice to have around when needed.

Heyho, seems like i have the same problem, can't use my
(altgr)-Button (and those shiny brackets, of course :7 ) anymore.

Strange stuff, could this be an issue with those xorg-server-1.4 updates i did yesterday?
There were some keyboard related updates, too (-> x11-misc/xkeyboard-config-1.1).
Uh, my keyboard leds don't work anymore? Wtf? Anyone else got these kind of problems?

[EDIT]
I've found several errors regarding ABI changes in my xorg logfile, did you also check that?
[/EDIT]

Hi!
Same here! Alt Gr, Ctrl + Alt + FN and Windows-Keys are not working anymore. :(

Found this line in /var/log/Xorg.0.log:
Code:
(WW) Couldn't load XKB keymap, falling back to pre-XKB keymap

Could that be the problem?

After i recompiled my input drivers (yeah, that xorg-server-1.4 ABI change issue, remember?),
my brackets are "back".

Check the output of
Code:
equery l xf86-input

and rebuild those packets.

Well, [[[]]]]]]][][[][][][][[][][][][][], but i my
keyboard leds are still dead. Strange.

Ok, I will try to recompile this package...

Keyboard-LEDs don't work for me either but this seems to be another bug:

https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-581633-highlight-caps+led.html

EDIT: Recompiled x11-drivers/xf86-input-keyboard - no change :(

That is really annoying, since I'm not able to use Latex (no backslash) and can't even write mails

I don't know is this related to your problems anyhow, but once I had that kind of KB-problems it was because my /var/tmp didn't have correct permissions anymore which should be 1777.

But it was because I moved the system to another HD with cp -a and didn't correct the permissions.

All nice and dandy but...

I didn't touch my xorg. And if I log into X with root all my keys work fine. Including VT switching. So I don't think it's a keymap issue, or driver issue. I'm almost willing to bet one of the packages I emerged with kdebase-meta fucked up some permisions.

Things that got emerged between working keyboard and non-working keyboard:
Code:
[ebuild  N    ] kde-base/kdebase-pam-7  0 kB
[ebuild  N    ] kde-base/kdepasswd-3.5.7-r1
[ebuild  N    ] kde-base/kwin-3.5.7
[ebuild  N    ] kde-base/kreadconfig-3.5.6
[ebuild  N    ] kde-base/ksmserver-3.5.7
[ebuild  N    ] kde-base/ksplashml-3.5.7
[ebuild  N    ] kde-base/kpersonalizer-3.5.7
[ebuild  N    ] sys-apps/lm_sensors-2.10.1
[ebuild  N    ] kde-base/kdebugdialog-3.5.6
[ebuild  N    ] kde-base/kscreensaver-3.5.7
[ebuild  N    ] kde-base/klipper-3.5.7
[ebuild  N    ] kde-base/ksystraycmd-3.5.5
[ebuild  N    ] kde-base/ktip-3.5.7
[ebuild  N    ] kde-base/knetattach-3.5.7
[ebuild  N    ] kde-base/kstart-3.5.6
[ebuild  N    ] kde-base/kxkb-3.5.7
[ebuild  N    ] kde-base/kappfinder-3.5.7
[ebuild  N    ] kde-base/kate-3.5.7-r1
[ebuild  N    ] kde-base/nsplugins-3.5.7
[ebuild  N    ] app-text/psutils-1.17
[ebuild  N    ] app-text/enscript-1.6.4-r3
[ebuild  N    ] kde-base/kdcop-3.5.7
[ebuild  N    ] kde-base/kpager-3.5.7
[ebuild  N    ] kde-base/kmenuedit-3.5.7
[ebuild  N    ] x11-apps/xsetroot-1.0.1
[ebuild  N    ] sys-devel/gdb-6.6-r2
[ebuild  N    ] kde-base/konsole-3.5.7
[ebuild  N    ] kde-base/kcheckpass-3.5.7
[ebuild  N    ] kde-base/ksysguard-3.5.7
[ebuild  N    ] kde-base/kdeprint-3.5.7
[ebuild  N    ] kde-base/drkonqi-3.5.7
[ebuild  N    ] kde-base/kdesktop-3.5.7
[ebuild  N    ] kde-base/kdm-3.5.7-r2
[ebuild  N    ] kde-base/kdebase-startkde-3.5.7
[ebuild  N    ] kde-base/kdebase-meta-3.5.7

*edit* Weeeeee.... same here it seems:
Code:
# cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log | grep XKB
(WW) Couldn't load XKB keymap, falling back to pre-XKB keymap
(had to copy/paste that pipe from IRC - that's how annoying this thing is)

Ok, finally solved this. This got me to the right point: http://www.freebsd.de/archive/de-bsd-questions/de-bsd-questions.200707/0071.html (german, sorry)
Just did
Code:
ln -s /var/lib/xkb /usr/share/X11/xkb/compiled

and everything is fine again (keyboard works, no more warnings in xorg.log). But I really wonder WHY this happend and WHICH package caused this mess...

Doesn't do me any good

For roots xorg:
Code:
# cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log | grep XKB
#

Users xorg still shows that error.

Does the symlink I mentioned above exist on your system? Maybe it's a permission problem with this link / directory...

Well... aside from /var/lib/xkb/xkb pointing to /var/lib/xkb all seems fine:

Code:
ls -alh /var/lib/xkb
total 12K
drwxr-xr-x  2 root root 4.0K Sep 26 19:42 .
drwxr-xr-x 16 root root 4.0K Sep 25 05:28 ..
-rw-r--r--  1 root root    0 Sep 26 03:32 .keep_x11-apps_xkbcomp-0
-rw-r--r--  1 root root  644 Feb 19  2007 README.compiled
lrwxrwxrwx  1 root root   12 Sep 26 19:28 xkb -> /var/lib/xkb

Btw. i had to restart all my applications to get my keys working again.
I also had to completly restart several programs like konsole, because
even after restarting kdm those restarted konsole/konqueror
sessions had the old "i don't know your alt-gr"-behavior.

Strange again. But well, what do i know

I rebooted a number of times since the start of this thread...

facts so far:

My xorg.conf is good since everything works of I log into X as root
My keymaps are good too... for the same reason

Another strange thing - running startx -- :1 as user from within X hangs. Running startx -- :1 as root from that same X session works fine.

I'm really getting desperate here. I must've tried pretty much any suggestion in these forums so far.

I went a tad out of my way an ran xmodmap -px while logged into X as user and then as root:
xmodmap outputs for both
Since they were different I did
Code:
# xmodmap -pke >> .Xmodmap
from within the root X, chowned the file to my user and moved it to my users home. Thus basicaly creating a custom xmodmap that is exactly the same as roots. Meaning it should work. It, howeer, still refuses to work. I'm not really sure how to load it but...
Code:
$ xmodmap /home/user/.Xmodmap
doesn't change a single thing. VT switching still refuses to work, Alt-gr refuses to work, xmodmap -pk output is, however, the same as it's produced for root (which, for root, works). WTF am I missing here? I'm starting to feel like a windows n00b that never heard of ctrl-alt-del...

Rebuilt xkbcomp, xkeyboard-config, xorg-server, xf86-input-evdev in that order, now it works again.
Previously I couldn't log into X anymore, probably because of a wrong keymaping (couldn't type PW correctly, I assume).

Thanks - I was pulling my hair out over this as I had by ill chance just connected a new keyboard and thought this was the source of the problem.

Thanks, this one helped.

Here these issues started to happen after upgrade of xkeyboard-config from 0.9 to 1.1, now everything is fine :).

Excuse me, but wouldn't
Code:

grep XKB /var/log/Xorg.0.log

be simpler and more effective?
