n00b: dell 8200 cdrom help!

Hi,

I've changed my mandrake 9.1 installation to gentoo. So far, I love it, and have gotten kde and my nvidia geforce to work perfectly.

However, I cannot mount my cdrom. The default fstab was set to mount /dev/cdroms/cdrom0... or something like that. However, that device does not exist, nor does any sort of cdrom in my dev directory.

When I use the live cd, it mounts my cd as hdb (ide-scsi), and on booting, I see hdb pop up as well.

My question is: I obviously forgot to do something during the installation. Can anyone help me figure out what this was???

First in your /dev directory look in the ide folder and see if there are any CDrom devices in there, then go into scsi directory and see if there are any devices there. In my case, my burner is located in

In my ide directory, I have the folders hd and host0. There is nothing in my scsi directory. My cd is also a cd burner and dvd reader.

What is in your modules.autoload file? I would make sure that you not loading the scsi modules when you are booting. Also, do you have a zip drive? If not I would reccomend taking the IDEFLOPPY option out and recompile the kernel. If you are recompiling the kernel I would take out all of the scsi stuff too. Look at your /etc/devfsd file and see what is set in there.

What exactly is in /dev/ide folder if you go in several levels. There should be your harddrive, but is there anything else?

The only thing in my modules.autoload is: nvidia.

I do have a usb-connecting zip drive (usually sd0 or something like that).

There is absolutely nothing in devfsd.
