hi .
i'm newbie to gentoo ...
i had installed gentoo on my pc , now try to install it on my notebook , so used linux-2.6.22-gentoo-r5 .
every thing is ok and gentoo is installed ...
but when try to install net-dialup/ppp , emerge tries to download gentoo-sources-2.6.22-r8 ( as dependency , maybe ... ) .
but why ?
how can i force emerge to use current kernel version ? (and not download r8 )
thanks for your attnetion . _________________ Nothing but perfection |

Just update your kernel is not that hard. There must of been a bug with the current kernel you have and the dialup ppp software.
If you went with the defaults on the install then most likely you are running the genkernel.
Here is a link for you on how to upgrade your kernel.
http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/kernel-upgrade.xml
Rather easy if you do the genkernel option. |

i even used another kernel version ( 2.6.16 from kernel.org not gentoo repository ) , but had the same problem .
don't have problem with upgrading kernle , but do i have to upgrade kernel each time trying to install some kind of softwares ? _________________ Nothing but perfection |

You should not have to upgrade each time you do upgrades. But normally with Gentoo when you install something and it requires other software it will emerge/install that software as well. And now it may need someting with in the kernel source in order to install the ppp software. just because it downloads it and even compiles it does not mean it will use it. |

wow so intresting ...
got kernel-2.6.22.9 , and upgraded it .
but the problem was the same . emerge net-dialup/ppp tried to get gentoo-sources-2.6.22-r8 again .
so emerged with --nodeps option and finally ppp installed .
anyway , thanks for your attention ... _________________ Nothing but perfection |
