"Packaging groups coordinate efforts to deliver software for Mac OS X

June 20, 2003 — The Fink, Gentoo, and DarwinPorts projects are pleased to announce the formation of a cooperative development alliance forged to facilitate delivery of freely available software to Mac OS X. Under this new alliance, the projects will share information and coordinate efforts for porting software to Apple's Mac OS X and Darwin operating systems. Members of the alliance will share information using the www.metapkg.org Web site, which will provide a home for this cooperative effort."

Amazing. Same packages, different interface, that is what I hope for.

Fink can have their hardcoded but functional CFLAGS, gentoo can have the advantages of customisable CFLAGS, USE, but especially, batch-processing interface! I hate it when fink requires human attention to do even simple things like updating, and asking for which package to use instead of selecting a default, etc.

Yes, that would fit in, wouldn't it?

Perhaps I'll install cygwin on wine.

So does this mean no more straight up portage for mac os x? I dont want a combination of the three, to be honest I despise fink and would rather avoid all packages and do things manually then use fink.

Doesn't sound like a combined product to me, just orgaized coordination between the projects.

Ok, reread teh metapkg site, kinda vague but I think you a right. Honestly the name metapkg just kinda threw me for a loop, it sounds like a package format hence the pkg ;)
