For some reason on this newly installed machine, when I try to upgrade, portage wants to install gcc 3.3!? This happened to me once before a while back ago, but I forget what the fix was.

This is usually because some binary package requires the c++ libraries provided by gcc 3.3.

These libraries can be provided by either gcc 3.3, or sys-libs/libstdc++-v3, but portage (stupidly) pulls in gcc 3.3 by default.

`emerge -1 sys-libs/libstdc++-v3`should force it to only install the libs for you.

This has been covered in [SOLVED] ati-drivers (8.35.5 but same for later) req gcc3.3?, Unwanted GCC 3.3 trying to emerge? and gcc-3.3.6 a dependency for xorg-x11? [SOLVED] amongst many others, it's hard to believe there isn't any sticky on this yet.

Check on the bug referenced in the second link for more details.
