I don't know if anyone has the same experience but the 270.x drivers
are significantly slower than the 260 counterpart.

First glxgears is 2x slower.

Scrolling in Firefox 4 is erratic, sometime slow, sometime normal.

No difference, with or without compositing.

This is true for xorg-server 1.9.x and 1.10.x.

No amount of tweaking resolves the issue.

I have a GTX 460m and yes I force the maximum performance in powermizer.

Try checking http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/forumdisplay.php?f=14

I'm running an older chipset 750a (onboard graphics) and have seen no problem

Yep, I did follow all possible leads but it seems that I can't
specifically find my behavior.

However, there seem to be some kind of weirdness between 260 and 270.

Here are some comments from Arch https://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=33305
there seem to be 1 mention of regression.

Also, it would be interesting to see someone here do a glxgears with 260 and then 270.

I wonder if it is related to mobile only chipset...

Even though "glxgears is not a benchmark", I did see a slight decrease from 24k fps to 19k. Not as drastic as yours, but I'm probably using an older kernel.

Kernel: 2.6.32-r29 x86_64
GPU: GTX 460

Whether that drop in fps is indicative of any real performance issues, I can't tell. The desktop GPU is too fast. Maybe I'll test this on a mobile GPU.
Nvidia's driver quality has really declined since the start of the 26x.x series though, in my opinion.

edit: Tried this with my 8400m GS, with 2.6.32-r24 x86_64, didn't really see any change. Might be due to the kernel though.

There is a know issue with kernel 2.6.38+

http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=160186

Which basically gives this type of message in dmesg:

Code:

[   19.940013] nvidia 0000:01:00.0: irq 57 for MSI/MSI-X
[   20.002623] ioremap error for 0xbb59d000-0xbb59e000, requested 0x10, got 0x0
[   20.002629] ioremap error for 0xbb570000-0xbb571000, requested 0x10, got 0x0
[   20.002635] ioremap error for 0xbb572000-0xbb573000, requested 0x10, got 0x0
[   20.002640] ioremap error for 0xbb59d000-0xbb59e000, requested 0x10, got 0x0
[   20.002645] ioremap error for 0xbb57e000-0xbb57f000, requested 0x10, got 0x0
[   20.002650] ioremap error for 0xbb59c000-0xbb59d000, requested 0x10, got 0x0
[   20.002655] ioremap error for 0xbb59c000-0xbb59d000, requested 0x10, got 0x0
[   20.002660] ioremap error for 0xbb56c000-0xbb56d000, requested 0x10, got 0x0
[   20.002665] ioremap error for 0xbb54e000-0xbb54f000, requested 0x10, got 0x0

I have no idea if this can impact performance...

However, I will test 270.x with my GTX470 on my desktop computer soon.

I installed the 2.6.38-r5 kernel and the nvidia-270.41.06 drivers today on my laptop, and *so far* things seem to be okay. 270.41.06 isn't available in portage for some reason, but all I had to do was copy the 270.41.03 ebuild+files to my own overlay, change the name, and build the manifest for it.

I used the "stuff" overlay

I take back what I said about there not being any problems. While the intermittent 1-second hangs are gone, the system (and especially firefox) is sluggish after a resume from suspend.

@Anon-E-moose: "stuff" overlay eh? I'll have to check out what exactly is in there.

I don't do hibernation/suspend (I have no use for it on my desktop)
but it seems that lots of people are having problems with X and video after resume,
especially with the newer kernels.

I still didn't test it on my desktop but with my Asus G73JW notebook there is no question...

It is slower.

Ok, so I have completed the install of my new desktop (Asus P8P67 + 2600K) and a GTX470.

Same thing, I see a performance drop going from 260 to 270.

opengl apps are slower
firefox scrolling is sometimes slower/jerky
compiz is jerky

glxgears is 40-50% slower

Did report, no real answer, I just want to know if there are others...

try to isolate the problem.

What about 270.41.19?

changelog wrote:
* Fixed a bug in the VDPAU presentation queue that could cause 1 second hangs when transitioning from blit-based display to overlay- based display. This would most commonly happen when disabling a compositing manager.
* Fixed a bug that could cause crashes when capturing SDI video.
* Fixed a corner-case in which the OpenGL driver could leak resources in applications utilizing fork().
* Addressed a Linux kernel interface compatibility problem that could lead to ioremap() errors and, potentially, functional and/or stability problems.
* Fixed a bug that caused SLI initialization to fail on some Intel based systems.
* Fixed a bug that caused SLI initialization to fail when using recent Linux kernels, such as 2.6.38.

I have just downgraded to the latest 260 version of the nvidia drivers as the 270 version does not work with compiz for me. With 270 when turning on compiz in KDE the screen no longer updates - I can still interact with the screen by clicking on areas I know have buttons in it etc, but the display itself just doesn't update. It appears frozen, as if someone had taken a screen snapshot and stuck it over the top of everything. I run 2 x screens (to get a 3 head accelerated display) which may or may not be related. Downgrading to the 260 drivers fixes the issue. This happens in both kernels 2.36.8 and 2.38.6.

I ll merge x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers-275.09.07 at some point today as it's part of my emerge world  . Will post back then. Currently I use 260.19.44 with compiz enabled and it works ok (I can run StarCraft 2 on low details).
