PostPosted: Thu Sep 13, 2007 7:48 pm    Post subject: Problem starting x with s3 driver Reply with quote

Hi, I've been working on getting a test Gentoo VM working, and having some issues. I'm using Microsoft Virtual PC (I know, I know, but it's the best I can do on this machine right now, I'm afraid) which I have set with 512 MB ram and 16 GB HD space, installed with recommended settings, and the VM runs as a PIII with an S3 vid card with 8 MB video RAM. I just wanted to get it up quickly without having to go through the nitty-gritty of configuring this time, just to see it working, so I used an old copy of the 2006 live CD installer (the 2007 one wasn't working with the VM for some reason). It crashed before installing any extra packages, but did have the kernel and I was able to boot it and log in as root (the install died right before it created my user).

So far, I've installed and upgraded portage, got it working by fixing a sym-link problem, emerged ping, ftp, traceroute, emacs, vi, and world, then xorg-x11 and kdebase-startkde, then manually merged the updated config files. I can get x to start (have not linked kde to it yet), but only using the vga driver. When I tried launching KDE like that, I could not use the utility it started up with. I tried manually changing the resolution and the video driver, but each one gives its own error message. I think I need to be working with the S3 video driver, so I'm sticking with that.

I don't know what all I need to post here, but I would like some help...I have already googled it and found exactly one other person reporting this problem (on Fedora 7 with a VM) who had not gotten an answer, and looked on the forums...can anyone give me a suggestion what I must have missed over here?

I am attaching my xorg.conf and the log from the session...I appended the error message it put on the screen, because it did not put that in the log. In case that is all you need and will save you having to scroll all the way to the bottom to find it, here is the error:

X: symbol lookup error: /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers//s3_drv.so: undefined symbol: RamDacInit
giving up.
xinig: Connection refused (errno111): unable to connect to X server
xinit: No such process (errno 3): Server error.

Thanks in advance if anyone can help me fix this!

Note: I have also posted this to the Desktop Environment forum, but not getting much help there so far...one person suggested that I do a revdep-rebuild, but that did not work. I still can't find anything via google, and I really, really do not want to abandon this project as it has taken me as much time as it has (and I've enjoyed it so far) and I really want to see this working. Any help will be greatly appriciated. Thanks!
