I know belnet supports ipv6. I'm just not sure if they mirror gentoo on it, probably is the same server I guess, so try it
ftp://ftp.belnet.be/mirror/rsync.gentoo.org/ _________________ Life is like a box of chocolates... Before you know it, it's empty... |

ftp.belnet.be didn't work when you want connect with ipv6
A few week ago, it worked with trumpetti.atm.tut.fi !!! But now, it doesn't work !!
Why Gentoo doesn't have more ipv6 servers ???
Code: | www root # rsync -6 rsync://trumpetti.atm.tut.fi/
rsync: failed to connect to trumpetti.atm.tut.fi: Network is unreachable
rsync error: error in socket IO (code 10) at clientserver.c(83)
www root # rsync -6 rsync://ftp.belnet.be
rsync: failed to connect to ftp.belnet.be: Network is unreachable
rsync error: error in socket IO (code 10) at clientserver.c(83)

So... What is wrong with using ipv4? It isn't Gentoo that should support ipv6, it's the mirrors that don't support it. AFAIK ipv6 won't be supported by major ISP's until at least 2004 - 2005 so the servers won't support it until then either.
By the way, I can ping trumpetti.atm.tut.fi just fine, so the server isn't down. Also rsync'ing on it trough ipv4 works fine. Maybe they just took ipv6 down? _________________ Life is like a box of chocolates... Before you know it, it's empty... |

We have a network test with ipv6 only !!!
And i can't update my system, because for this network i need to keep ipv6 only !!!
And i Know, I can ping trumpetti.atm.tut.fi, but they put ipv6 down !! And now, i can't have a ipv6 rsync server and http server...
My ISP supported IPV6... And i'm suprised, because Gentoo didn't have ipv6 server up, i know it's not very used now... And now, i must change system on my server because I can't update, or i need to make a big change on my config !!
AND I REPEAT THIS A IMPORTANT TEST ON A "IPV6 ONLY" NETWORK !!!
It's strange !! IPV6 gentoo servers are down, and it's not a problem for them ???? |

Have you ever tested something ?
I'm in the same situation as worx. I have a pool of servers which run only w/ IPv6. The main goal is.... mmm if you can't imagine the goal, explaining it to you would be non-efficient anyway.

Thanks for your great light !!!
You're right : reformulate some parts of a question can help anybody to understand it better...
So, I'll train reformulate it too :
Why does the ONLY mirroring server which was supporting IPv6 is ipv6-down ? Could we imagine more Gentoo Linux IPv6 mirrors ?

Mouarf... because you are probably not concerned, IPv6 is just a tool ? let me laugh. I'm using IPv6 on an important part of my network. Renater3 (the network of the french universities) is running only IPv6 (and does encapsulation for IPv4). etc.. etc.. So IPv6 is already on the way !!

maybe... and this is the subject of this thread.
Then... would we abandon the Gentoo Linux part of our work for debian or OpenBSD ?
Thanks for future (constructive) replies |

mmmmmm...
I'm hiding. trumpetti is ok. The pb was on our link to it. Now it's ok.
But a question stays : Would there have more Gentoo IPv6 mirrors ? |

Because we haven't had more people step forward willing to donate source mirrors that support ipv6.
So, since you use and depend upon ipv6, why haven't you donated a source mirror to help support Gentoo Linux and other Gentoo Linux ipv6 users?

BeTa dude, no need to flame
I have been looking into ipv6 myself too, because I find it interesting, especially the fact you can have a public pool of IP's for your home network, but currently my ISP doesn't support it yet so I'd have to go through a tunnel. Which I might try when I reinstall our router @ home. I just asked for the reason of him not using ipv4, and I have it now I test stuff too you know, with no apparent reason but to try it out I'm not saying people shouldn't use ipv6, because it is off course the future. People just have to accept that every innovation takes time to get introduced and used. _________________ Life is like a box of chocolates... Before you know it, it's empty... |

mmm... I'm not able to read your previous message like the last one. But if it is a mistake, I'm sorry for that.

We don't "depend" on it. We are just testing. But you're right, the main goal of any Free Software user has to be more than using his tools. Here we do not have enough bandwidth to provide an IPv6 mirror. In an other case, be sure that I would do everything I can to make my own IPv6 mirror for the community !
But this is not the only thing we can do to help Gentoo Linux. We've created the frgentoo project (w/ http://doc.gentoofr.org/, many traductors...), I'm writing some docs, etc... But you were right ! Helping the gentoo project providing an IPv6 mirror could be really great. I'm dreaming about that |
