I just tried to emerge openoffice.
I merged gcc 3.04 as per the instructions, and installation began.
Blackdown java was downloaded and installed.
When I got the question 'Where is the home of your Java install' I answered /opt/blackdown-jdk-1.3.1/bin (path found with whereis).
I then saw in a flash some error message 'proper jdk not found' or so, but compilation continued.
Then, after another half hour of compiling, compilation broke off with the error that javac was not found.
I checked the directory /opt/blackdown-jdk-1.3.1/bin, and javac is there.
Anyone any idea what I'm doing wrong?
I don't have the exact error messages handy any more, because they scrolled off screen, and regenerating them will take me another 40 minutes.
I will restart the emerge now, and save compiler output with tee. |

I had some problems with java, and ended up having to run through the notes here http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/java.xml and then things started installing fine. Seems like emergeing blackdown would set it up, but it didn't for me. |

Try entering the path as /opt/blackdown-jdk-1.3.1/bin/ <-- note trailing slash. I think that's what I had to do. Very picky about syntax. |

Thanks Grakker!
java-config --list-available-vms
java-config --set-system-vm=blackdown-jdk-1.3.1
env-update
source /etc/profile
did it for me too!
And indeed, it would be nice if Portage would have taken car of this. |
