Well kick me in the crotch and call me Sally. I finally got this amd64 install done on a new Core 2 Quad machine and this crap comes up during the first bootup:

fsck.ext3: No such file or directory while trying to open /dev/ROOT

Then it says a bunch of stuff about the superblock not being able to be read and to try doing an e2fsck with an alternate superblock.

First off, that /dev/ROOT is something I've never seen before. A little search reveals /etc/fstab could have been overwritten. I logged in as root for maintenance and took a look at fstab and instead of something like:

/dev/hda1
/dev/hda3
/dev/hda2

it said:

/dev/BOOT
/dev/ROOT
/dev/SWAP

So I try to change it, but an error comes up saying the file system is read-only (the only thing marked ro in fstab is the cdrom). What is the easiest way to get this /etc/fstab fixed?

Thanks,
David

Just remount your root device rw while logged in as root for maintenance.
Code:
mount -o remount,rw /dev/? /

or boot from the LiveCD, mount your partition and change fstab.
