hello gentoo gang,
Anyone else think it might be a good idea to include Links, the textmode browser in the default gentoo install? I printed off the install docs for my first gentoo installation, but for those not so lucky to have done so, being able to hit the web and view the docs in links would be a really big advantage (and irc.openproject.net's #gentoo wouldn't get hit with so many of the install questions!). I also proposed earlier including IRSSI, the irc client, in the default install. The two of these would be excellent addition to the gentoo installation process, which can often be a not-so-exciting experience.

As I mentioned in my other reply, the purpose of the install ISO is to get a barely-functional linux system up and running and give you the choice of all the apps you want to install. I, for one, don't want links on my system. Other people do. The way things are set up now, we can all be happy because of the choice we have after the install process. I don't think adding links and an irc client to the iso provides enough value to offset the bloat that it adds.
Regarding being able to access the documentation: yes, I think that would be valuable. However, you can already access the install doc during the installation process:
which is the most important one, anyway. Some other folks have suggested adding additional docs to the CD (desktop build doc, alternative installation doc, etc.) which I think is a good idea and preferable to including links and an IRC client.
My $.02.

hello,
Now that you mention it, including those docs (desktop guide, etc) would amount to the same thing in most ways. The only other advantage to links would be searching on the net for hardware issues if any cropped up that weren't addressed in anything gentoo-related. But I guess those can wait for after an installation has completed. _________________ pmj / [a]orange |

I believe that's "Cleo", and it's "Miss Cleo" to you and I.
(no, I've never called her -- I've just seen way, way too many of her stupid, "Call me now" commercials on TV.)
Not that this has anything to do with putting links on the install CD...

That is without a doubt one of the most annoying commercials on modern television today. _________________ This message self destructed a long time ago. |
