I'm using a Gentoo 1.4.2.3 system which is using software RAID1 on a few partitions using SCSI disks. My root partition is md1. When i do a shutdown -h now or a reboot, the last things that are said are:

* Stopping software RAID
/dev/md1: Device or resource busy
* Remounting remaining filesystems readonly...
Power down.

I'm not sure if Gentoo has always done this, or just started reciently (I don't shut down often enough - it's a server).

Can this be considered a safe shutdown? I've manually killed all processes that don't seem critical (the vast majority of them) but it made no difference.

If this isn't 100% safe, what would be the solution? Can I do a simple modification to the /etc/init.d/halt.sh? If there is anything else I should provide, please let me know.

Thanks in advance,

Adam

At "Power-Down" you should hear the HDD spind down and enter Sleep mode.

Its okay to power-off.
