|
|
I'm having problems getting sound out of my via82xx onboard sound card on my Epox 8KHA+ motherboard.
I've followed the instructions to the word in http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/alsa-guide.xml and have seemed to install the alsa-drivers correctly.
my lsmod gives this:
Code: | Module Size Used by Tainted: P
snd-pcm-oss 40356 0 (autoclean)
snd-mixer-oss 13912 0 (autoclean) [snd-pcm-oss]
snd-via82xx 14080 0
snd-pcm 68320 0 [snd-pcm-oss snd-via82xx]
snd-timer 16900 0 [snd-pcm]
snd-mpu401-uart 4128 0 [snd-via82xx]
snd-rawmidi 15296 0 [snd-mpu401-uart]
snd-seq-device 4516 0 [snd-rawmidi]
snd-page-alloc 5696 0 [snd-via82xx snd-pcm]
snd-ac97-codec 41160 0 [snd-via82xx]
snd 33732 0 [snd-pcm-oss snd-mixer-oss snd-via82xx snd-pcm snd-timer snd-mpu401-uart snd-rawmidi snd-seq-device snd-ac97-codec]
nvidia 1542816 10

My /etc/modules.d/alsa contains:
Code: |
...
# ALSA portion
alias char-major-116 snd
# OSS/Free portion
...
## ALSA portion
alias snd-card-0 snd-via82xx
## alias snd-card-1 snd-ens1371
## OSS/Free portion
## alias sound-slot-0 snd-card-0
## alias sound-slot-1 snd-card-1
...
# OSS/Free portion - card #1
alias sound-service-0-0 snd-mixer-oss
alias sound-service-0-1 snd-seq-oss
alias sound-service-0-3 snd-pcm-oss
alias sound-service-0-8 snd-seq-oss
alias sound-service-0-12 snd-pcm-oss
...
alias /dev/mixer snd-mixer-oss
alias /dev/dsp snd-pcm-oss
alias /dev/midi snd-seq-oss
# Set this to the correct number of cards.
options snd cards_limit=1

I've umuted the Master and PCM channels
Code: | Simple mixer control 'Master',0
Capabilities: pvolume pswitch pswitch-joined
Playback channels: Front Left - Front Right
Limits: Playback 0 - 31
Front Left: Playback 31 [100%] [on]
Front Right: Playback 31 [100%] [on]
Simple mixer control 'PCM',0
Capabilities: pvolume pswitch pswitch-joined
Playback channels: Front Left - Front Right
Limits: Playback 0 - 31
Front Left: Playback 31 [100%] [on]
Front Right: Playback 31 [100%] [on]

And when I play the pop.wav there's no problems:
Code: | # aplay /usr/kde/3.1/share/sounds/pop.wav
Playing WAVE '/usr/kde/3.1/share/sounds/pop.wav' : Signed 16 bit Little Endian, Rate 44100 Hz, Mono
|
But I get no sound output...
dmesg does give this though:
Code: | 0: nvidia: loading NVIDIA Linux x86 nvidia.o Kernel Module 1.0-4363 Sat Apr 19 17:46:46 PDT 2003
PCI: Setting latency timer of device 00:11.5 to 64
ALSA ../../alsa-kernel/pci/ac97/ac97_codec.c:2141: AC'97 0:0 analog subsections not ready

Has anybody else encountered this problem? Any ideas how to solve it? Thanks. |

Make sure you've killed any other sound server like esd and arts. |

I just realized that I have been getting sound output, just at a very low volume level. I have the master and PCM settings unmuted and at 100%, and plugged into my powered altec lansing speakers jacked up to the highest volume, i can barely hear any music.
I think this might be the dumb chipset's fault and not ALSA's. Has anybody else gotten decent sound out of this chipset? I know it also sounds like crap through windows, but at least it was audible crap. |

run alsamixer.
hehe
make sure you *UNMUTE* Master, Pcm, and such.
edit: always remember to read the entire post before you reply
but still, make sure you do this with alsamixer first. _________________ \\ trevorj |
