PostPosted: Thu Aug 23, 2007 4:43 am    Post subject: compiz-fusion features vis a vis Beryl Reply with quote

I recently switched from Beryl to Compiz-Fusion (0.5.2). There were two features in Beryl that I liked but can't find in C-F despite a lot of searching:
1) 3-D Windows effect with variable spacing between the windows
2) Ability to rotate the cube and keep it in place with Ctrl-Alt-Button2 until released by Button 2
Anybody know if these are available with Compiz-Fusion? If so, how/where to enable?
Thanks in advance for any help.

control-alt-button1 seems to grab the cube.

Yes (same with Beryl) but the cube snaps back after releasing Button 1. Beryl additionally offered the ability to rotate the cube to a fixed position. I was looking for that in C-F.

is there any reason you switched from beryl (just out of curiosity). I have never tried anything else besides beryl because it has never crashed and seems to just work without too much trouble.

compiz-fusion IS beryl. beryl is dead, use it if you want but support and updates aren't going to be forthcoming. compiz-fusion 0.5.2 is a LOT more stable then beryl was but YMMV. I haven't seen any plugins from beryl that haven't been ported to CF.

you are looking for the package: compiz-fusion-plugins-threed

Because of reports that Beryl has been merged with Compiz, but mainly because of some stability problems I had with it (occasional black window screens I couldn't fix). If it weren't for those issues, I would have stayed with Beryl.

Overlays and layman are explained at Gentoo Overlay's User Guide

Basically an overlay is a set of ebuilds that aren't considered quite stable enough/widely desirable/whatever to make it into the main portage tree, so an overlay is used (in the same manner as you can make your own local overlay for your own ebuilds). layman is a tool for managing various different overlays.

At present compiz-fusion is part of the xeffects overlay, ergo.....the easiest way to install compiz-fusion is to use layman to install the xeffects overlay and then emerge compiz-fusion etc.

compiz-fusion showed up in my portage last night.

I have found C-F pretty damn stable so far. window movements smoother.

Ahh well, you see there is a difference between compiz and compiz-fusion. Thus there is no confusion at all, just different packages :)

Whilst the version is the same (0.5.2) you are using compiz, whilst the alternative is to use compiz-fusion which as I understand "fuses" compiz and beryl into one.

@juniper: You only have compiz core. Compiz-fusion consists of addons for the core and is split into many packages: compiz-fusion-plugins-main, compiz-fusion-plugins-extra, libcompizconfig, ccsm (compizconfig settings manager), emerald, some other packages. All these packages have the same version as compiz core, currently it's 0.5.2. They are not yet in portage, only in the xeffects overlay.

fusion-icon-9999 is also available, but as of yesterday (22Aug) it was still masked by missing keyword. This posting has details:
https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-577261-highlight-fusionicon.html. Bit of a pain when I emerged it, as it had two dependencies that had to be unmasked, too. The section on "Using fusion-icon instead of compiz-manager" in the HOWTO compiz-fusion Wiki had helpful tips on using it (http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_compiz-fusion).

to ease typing, please refer to my post on properly emerging compiz-fusion + fusion-icon here: https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-p-4200204.html#4200204

Moved from Desktop Environments to Unsupported Software. Compiz-fusion isn't in the tree yet.

hmmm, it is about both. the thread started being about compiz, moved into C-F and the last post was asking about a comparison (so I know what to install).

No, its not. The whole thread has been about compiz-fusion, its is only yourself who has raised the issue of compiz. From the original post....

sorry, i got confused with a thread I started about compiz. my mistake...

to be more clear then, compiz 0.5.2 and C-F 0.5.2 are the same, except the xeffects overlay also has a bunch of extra ebuilds/programs. are they EXACTLY the same (i.e., will the extra stuff in C-F use the main line compiz as a dependency?)?

Yes.

but I take issue with the way he is equating them. Just because C-F depends on and uses the standard compiz package dosen't make them equal.

you could think of C-F as being a meta-package, if that helps visualize the difference.

C-F represents the following packages in addition to using compiz as it's compositing window manager:
Code:
dev-python/compizconfig-python
x11-wm/compiz-fusion
x11-plugins/compiz-fusion-plugins-main
x11-plugins/compiz-fusion-plugins-extra
x11-plugins/compiz-fusion-plugins-unsupported
x11-plugins/compiz-fusion-plugins-gears
x11-wm/emerald
x11-themes/emerald-themes
x11-apps/ccsm
x11-libs/libcompizconfig
x11-libs/compizconfig-backend-gconf
x11-libs/compizconfig-backend-kconfig
x11-libs/compiz-bcop

to demonstrate my point, you wouldn't say nautilus is the same as gnome just because the meta-package that is gnome includes nautilus. surely, nautilus is an integral part of the gnome desktop but they are not equatable.
