Hi,

I've got 10 GB put aside for programs and such (well, my / partition basically). My data, like pictures, music, documents, etc is on a separate drive and partition. Anyway, my / partition is now 60% full. That's pretty much 6 GB of used space, and I've barely installed anything. So how can I clean up space? Can I? Like, is there a whole lot of source code that was used to compile programs that isn't needed anymore that I can delete?

Thanks.

one quick place to start would be rm -rf /usr/portage/distfiles/*
you could also rm -rf /tmp/* if that gets too big

I wouldn't worry about it too much though - I've got close to a 10G partition for / on some of my machines and you don't really come close to running out unless you install a lot of games

You can clean out /usr/portage/distfiles if you haven't already; that's where the downloaded source code is kept for each package you compile. Next, you can clean out /var/tmp/portage if it isn't already empty; that's the workspace for stuff that is being compiled.

Do you have ccache installed and set in FEATURES in /etc/make.conf? If so, you may want to either decrease the amount of disk space for it and/or clean out /var/tmp/ccache. Take a look around the forums for a cruft-cleaning script by Ed Catmur (ecatmur); there's a thread on it somewhere.
