UT2004 input & sound pauses/lockups

Every minute or so in ut2004 the input (mouse/keyboard) would pause/lockup - the mouse doesnt work and the keyboard carries on doing whatever is pressed at the time - for a couple of seconds. The mouse lockup also happens in the menus. The strange thing is, the game itself just carries on merrily while im heading into a wall and cant stop it. Occasionally the sound would stop at the same time, for a couple of seconds. Nothing else on my system seems to be affected, and theres nothing in any logs. Ive tried replacing the ut2004 openal/libsdl libraries with my own to no avail. Has anyone any ideas about this?

Do these pauses happen in other CPU-intensive games, like Doom3?

The only stutter fix I know of is in ~/.ut2004/System/User.ini
