mpeg2 is a video codec, but if the tv only failed to play the sound then it's the audio codec you need to look at.

What audio codec was used with the files that failed to play?

It could be any *nix on the tv, my money would be on *bsd as the license will let you do just about anything with it anyway, but even if it was linux, where would the license violation be?

Probably your -oac setting was wrong  Do you have a video that works on the box, from which you could learn the audio codec?

Use Avidemux and use the DVD or SVCD preset to get you started.
