|
|
Today upgraded xorg to xorg-server 1.30 and xorg-x11 7.2. Running KDE split ebuilds, various flavors of 3.5.7, and xdm 1.1.6. Since the upgrade, xdm refuses to start KDM. I can run KDM just fine by itself and for now have cut xdm out of init and stuck the kdm command into local.start. But I'm not happy about this. Config values for XDM are unchanged, so why isn't it starting KDM? Once KDE is started via running kdm, it is fine.
Here's the output of running "kdm -debug 1" - I don't see much helpful.

Note the error messages pertaining to login etc are only due to me killing xdm without logging in - at least I believe that's the case.
Suggestions? I have ransacked the forums for similar problems but nothing has clicked.

Check in your /etc/conf.d/xdm configuration and make sure that they displaymanager variable is set to kdm not xdm.
Code: | nano -w /etc/conf.d/xdm |

Yes, yes, yes, it is. This remains unchanged. It's not that simple, unfortunately. |

Well, given that XDM is not needed for any reason other than to start KDM, I'm going to stick with my workaround - remove xdm from the default run-level and keep the command in local.start for kdm. Even if I wanted something other than KDM, I could go with slim as an alternative.
It seems strange to keep something as crappy as xdm hanging around ... but wiser heads than mine have made this decision. |
