Whats a typical value for CPU consumption due to X? Top is telling me my X is using anything up to 75% (typically 60%). I have a Konsole and Firefox open. Not running any desktop widgets or other fancy effects.

That isnt right is it? Any suggestions how to track down the problem?

P.S.
Same question for Firefox. Its hovering around the 20% mark, but Ive seen it spend a long time in the high 60s ... Im fairly sure it should be more like 5%.

Obviously, it depends on your system. If you're running a pentium-II or something, yes firefox can easily take half your CPU.

Also depends what firefox is displaying. While gmail loads, or I have a flash movie playing, firefox takes more for example.

Anyway, right now on my athlon xp 2400, X is taking 5%, and firefox 10%. I have several (dozen or so) windows open, and within firefox many (half a dozen) tabs open.

HTH.

Hm. Odd. I just looked at top and it said `init' was eating most: 0% ^^ That's of course because nothing was running
I'm using wmii however and galeon as a web browser (which is pretty much like firefox though).

It will depend on your system's specs and on the DM/WM you are running. 60% for X is quite high though...
