I have installed Gentoo 1.2, now a clean (i.e. reformatted HD) Gentoo 1.3b and have the same problem. Here is what I installed on and the install procedure...

Installed on Dell Inspiron 8200 laptop with ext3 boot and XFS root.

1) Install base sytem and build the optimized Gentoo kernel.
2) Install kde base.
3) install Nvidia drivers for Gforce 2 Go RevA08.
4) Set up kdm.
5) Go into KDE as root and use the user manager to set up a new user.
6) Default group for user is "user" and add to wheel & sound groups.
7) Log in as user.
8) Check su works at command prompt. It does.
9) Try root file manager.
10) Watch with utter amazement and disbelief as absolutiely nothing happens.
11) Try typing "kdesu -t konqueror" at command prompt. Output is at end of this post.

Sorry to be persistant with this problem but someone, somewhere will install Gentoo on a Dell Inspiron and probably get the same problem. I don't understand how this can be a hardware issue but seeing as I am the only soul who has this problem I don't know what else it can be.

I have a work-around I can do at a command prompt involving su then setting XAUTHORITY and XSESSION but it is a fiddle and I would really like kdesu to work as Root Himself intended.

Have I exausted the possibilities and should I now report this as a bug?

Regards,
Simon B.
