ive read others' post about limewire but im afraid i still dont get it. limewire says it requires the java2 runtime enviornment. this is not in my portage list but i downloaded the self extracting .bin (there was no tar), and i emerge j2ee because i hear gentoo can run multiple vms so maybe i can get one up and running.

i get to the steps in gentoo.org/java.html where it asks me to: java-config --list-available-vms, but i cant niether the vm i emerged nor the self-extracting bin i dled are shown!

what have i done wrong?

Just put "java" as a USE variable in your /etc/make.conf file and limewire should be compiled with java support. In fact, limewire should compile with java support regardless -- if it's not, it may be a bug in the ebuild. might file a bug report on bugs.gentoo.org.

Regarding java2 runtime not being in portage; it most certainly is:

Code:
root@M3 kurtl # emerge -s jre

so -s is a handy switch... duely noted...

when i used mandrake everything was harder than i expected it to be, with gentoo i expect everything to be too hard and it already works very seamlessly. I though, from reading the dl instructions, i HAD to use sun's jre.

while we are on the subject, what vm should i be using? i ask because i read on gentoo.org that blackdown was slower than most, but "free-est."

I've had issues with Blackdown, and it tends to be slow. IBM is pretty solid, and reasonably fast. Sun defines the standard and thus is very, very stable, but it's large (50+ MB) and slow (but faster than the other JREs here).

I would push Sun, regardless of the silly licensing thing. It's not GPL (far from it), but if you want a good JRE...

Nope -- I am sadly uninformed when it comes to java. Don't know much about it at all.

FYI: I just downloaded and installed LimeWire. It's both easy and painless. Just make sure you have a JRE installed. (I used Sun's 1.4.0)

I haven't played with LimeWire much yet, but it looks ok.
