AC3 stopped working after update world [solved]

I performed an emerge update on my gentoo sysytem followed by depclean and revdep-rebuild. Since then, I have not been able to hear sound on video files with AC3. Mplayer says it cannot find the codec for the audio format 0x2000 - which after googling seems to refer to AC3. I can't seem to find out how to solve the problem. Any ideas?

Make sure you have the a52 useflag set for MPlayer and remerge it.
