|
|
Hi,
I have just installed Gentoo (2008.0) on my Shuttle SX38P2 system. Although the install went fine I am having trouble booting. The error is:
Code: |
Please append a correct "root=" boot option; here are the available partitions:
Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(2,0)
|
I believe the problem is that I have not configured S-ATA support for my chip-set (X38). The kernel config I used was that of the live cd (zcat /proc/config.gz).
Can anyone tell me what I should be looking into enabling. lsmod does not help as the live cd seems to load everything going.
Regards, Freddie.

Hello,
Sorry I looked briefly through the sata options in device drivers but could not see anything relating to X38, though while waiting for someone that could help there it may be good practice to double check your boot loader make sure it is pointing at the right device/partion also double check you compiled your file system support of choice directly into the kernel and not as a module. |

Enabling support for the intel chipsets will cover your X38 (under sata drivers) as they work fine on my X48.
Check your /boot/grub/grub.conf file and if you are using genkernel make sure you have the added real_root option set as the howto explains. _________________ Please add [solved] to the initial post's subject line if you feel your problem is resolved.

This morning, after a couple more attempts at enabling everything I copied the config from my other Gentoo system (P65, ASUS P5B) and that worked fine.
I'll diff the configs at some point to find out just what is needed.
Thanks, regards, Freddie. |
