I am trying to free up some disk space and it appears that portage is taking up more than it's fair share.
Code:
Galileo / # du -hs /usr/portage/
2.9G    /usr/portage/
Galileo / # du -hs /usr/src/
2.7G    /usr/src/

This seems to me to be quite a bit of disk space, so I am curious to know if and how I can save some disk space. Thanks for any help.

/usr/src is where kernels go...

Dunno bout portage.. mine is larger :?
Code:
ken@Midori ~ % du -hs /usr/portage
4.3G   /usr/portage

edit: distfiles can be cleaned out by `eclean-dist`

you can recover most of that space in /usr/portage by

Code:
rm /usr/portage/distfiles/*

As for /usr/src, try unmerging most of your unused kernels. In most cases, you only need one, but portage doesn't remove the older ones when it installs new ones. Ex:

Code:
emerge -C =sys-kernel/ck-sources-2.6.21

Looks like /usr/src is a bit crowded; you might want to clean out some older kernel sources:

Code:
emerge -Pav virtual/linux-sources
