UPDATE: I Guess the problem is only with certain videos. Others play fine (with no sound "no suitable decoder for fourcc 'vorb'") and don't make vlc crash at all. Others will not play any sound, not display an error related to sound and crash the interface (video continues playing). I have tried what was suggested in the first reply and had no success. All of these files have played perfectly in the past. I'm really confused on this one.

i've had that problem in the past, the usual fix was unmerge vlc and do a emerge --depclean then revdep-rebuild (if thats the correct command, it should tell you after the emerge --depclean) then reinstalled vlc. its a pain, it takes time but it has ususally worked. if that didnt work i simply waited a few days, resynced my portage and forced a rebuild of vlc and that worked. Other than that i cannot help.

Sadly its a common thing with vlc. I suggest using more than one player. See i use xine as my stander, mplayer to play .flv and mplayer and vlc to play stuff xine can't for some odd reason. I use lots of players.
