Usual thing, sound not working, please help etc. I apologise for re-posting this query so soon but I've tried the suggestions given in reply to my original posting, without success.
While I appreciate that people try to be helpful, could I ask that you refrain from replying unless you have some suggestions. Replies such as, ``yes, I have this problem too'' or ``Didn't you already post this once ?'' are unhelpful because busy experts will just use the view unanswered questions link and miss this question.
I'm going via the drivers route rather than kernel.
If I boot the Live CD and do the chroot thing for installation, sound works. So the hardware is OK. Can anyone suggest any files or diagnostics which I could compare, to see what the Live CD is doing differently ? The Live CD uses the kernel implementation and I would prefer to use drivers.
I've read https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-549263.html.

I am in group audio.
grep ALSA /etc/make.conf: | ALSA_CARDS="atiixp" |
alsa is set in USE.
I don't have OSS emulation, so /proc/asound/oss/sndstat doesn't exist.
There are no non-[ OK ] messages at boot. Module snd-atiixp is (apparently) loaded.
But when I try to use it all:
