The hard drive on my gentoo computer finally died. Or is very nearly dead. When I turn it on, it makes a loud, high pitched noise, and sometimes it starts clicking. Sometimes I can boot though.

So my question is this: Since I have had this operating system for something like 5 years now, can I just buy a new HD and copy the old one to it? Is it as easy as using dd? Or will there be details that will trip me up if I try it? The new HD will be much bigger (old one is 80 GB), and will probably be SATA (old one is PATA).

I don't want to reinstall from scratch if I can help it. Too much else to do.

best thing abt linux is everything is a file...

you can use "dd" but if you want different partition schemes just make the relevant partitions and use cp (using the preserve permissions option - bar /dev,/proc/,/tmp/,/media,/mnt...). Then just edit /mnt/NEW_DRIVE/etc/fstab as well as the copy of grub.conf before finally re-writing thej MBR

I bought an 80gb SATA to replace an 80gb IDE and used 'dd'. Worked fine. Not sure how it will work if your drives are different sizes though. I'm sure it can be made to work.

The size of the drives does not matter as long as the data can fit it will work fine. I've done it before so I can speak from first hand experience. Just make sure you make the appropriate adjustments for the differences in sata and ide mount points and drivers if need be.
