KDE 3.5.7, i386 architecture on AMD Turion (MSI S270 laptop).

Please look at http://www.landcroft.co.uk/snapshot.png --- for some reason, the emoticons are not displayed, although `real' images such as the Gentoo banner are. This is because the emoticons are Javascript links.

HOWEVER, another machine shares its .kde/share/apps and .kde/share/config directories with the laptop; that is, those two KDE directories are actually on a NFS server, and the two KDE paths are replaced with symlinks to those NFS directories. This ought to make the two machines behave the same, but the other (AMD64, KDE 3.5.5) displays the emoticons correctly.

So why should Javascript not work on the laptop ? It cannot be a matter of settings, although, just for the record, Settings / Configure / Java & Javascript has Enable Javascript globally checked (on both, of course, since they share a common configuration file).

One other thing to consider is that the Gentoo banner is a jpg and the emiticons are gif. Maybe qt was compiled without gif support.

This is a very common problem. I don't see why gif support isn't included by default without setting the flags? Is it because the gif format is commercial?

Yeah it is.
I don't think so, it's on with the desktop profile, the default profile is just minimal.
