is it a good idea to run 2 instances of emerge together, like this:

1.) as root, i use emerge to install something, which is already downloaded using "emerge -f":

emerge package1

2.) as normal user or as root user on another tty, i use emerge to only download some package:

emerge -fv package2

Is it possible without harming my system ?

I think is inefficient when you have in make.conf option in FEATURES parallel-fetch that is less typing involved
vi /etc/make.conf
FEATURES="parallel-fetch"

Hello arnuld,

You do not harm your systems by parallel download and compiling. You can download in one instance and emerge packages in another. As a mater of fact there is a make.conf feature that does parallel fetching of packages:
Code:
FEATURES="parallel-fetch"

Cheers,
Kosmas.

Yeah that'll work. I've compiled up to 4 things at once before.

You may run into problems on some occasions though, when the packages you are compiling have similar dependencies. In this instance one session may stall and say "waiting for lock" or something like that (can't remember at the moment). There have been times when a package has been compiling, and then other session gets up to the same package - at that point both of them will crash out. That's ok though - just do one at a time.
