Hi,
I'm on a bit of hurry so sorry for the bad start to the thread.
Gotta go for school, so more details coming in about 6 hours..
So, the problem:
X won't start. I just get black screen, keyboard shortcuts (ctrl+alt+f1, ctrl+alt+backspace) wont work and monitor goes to standby.
I've got nvidia-drivers emerged and here's my xorg.conf:
http://cene.shelli.fi/xorg.conf
Here's Xorg.0.log:
http://cene.shelli.fi/Xorg.0.log
Hardware:
axp 2800+
512mb ram
nvidia fx5200
The device section is identical (except the device names) to the one that was working fine with Debian. I've tried the config tools that come with X too, none of them working. The default xorg.conf wich x's confgi tool created gave an error like "nvidia driver has encountered too many errors. Exiting" or so..
I'm new to gentoo, but definately not new to Linux. I have used debian for 1,5 years now.. |

Ok, I got X to start by emerging xf86-driver-vesa and changing the driver to vesa at xorg.conf, but nothing but a black-and-white striped background and an X cursor pops up. I've compiled Openbox and set "exec openbox" to my .Xinitrc, but it wont help. Xorg.0.log wont show any errors. Any ideas? And the nvidia driver would be nice to get working too. ^_^ |

Try doing `eselect opengl set xorg-x11` before starting X. It'll be in software mode, but at least you can determine if there's something really awful happening. Also, are you using the nvidia-driver ebuild, or the driver from nvidia.com? _________________ I decree today that life is simply taking and not giving. England is mine... |

im having the same problems
xorg 7.2 with nvidia-drivers 1.0.9755-r1 from portage
using nvidia in eselect (ie: eselect opengl set nvidia)
same problems. black screen, no response, only pressing the restart button works
changing to xorg-x11 doesnt change anything..
it looks like the nvidia driver is to blame..
using basically the same config as shene and the xorg log file doesnt say anything interesting
using the nv driver works without problems as does the vesa driver
im using the nvidia 8500gt graphic card
any ideas? |

I have had a similar issue like that too on my old (though sold) PC. Behavior like this occurred when I had my monitor connected through a DVI port (I never tested it on a D-SUB 15-pin interface though) and it worked with the nv driver, but not with the nvidia driver. The solution for me was to manually specify the option: Option "ConnectedMonitor" "DFP" (it might have been "DFP-0" as well, I am not too sure about that anymore you'll have to try). |

no such luck.
switching to dsub didnt work and adding the option DFP-0 as well as DFP also did nothing.
i went ahead and ran the official nvidia installer but, again, it didnt change anything, as was expected.
this is baffling... |

ok, my problem has been solved.. it seems that the nvidia-drivers has no support for my graphic card yet.
the newer beta driver at the nvidia website now lets me use the nvidia module for X
schene however has fx5200 which should be supported by the nvidia-drivers or nvidia-legacy package... |
