Greetings.
Tonight I though it would be a good idea to update my packages.
emerge sync
emerge -up system
emerge -u system
There was five packages to update, and it did so happily.

I was then informed I had to update some configuration files.
So I ran:
etc-update

It would not let me say "no" to make the changes. Here is what it updated:
/etc/hosts
/etc/fstab
/etc/group
/etc/modules.autoload
/etc/conf.d
/etc/conf.d/local.start
/etc/conf.d/net

So now I am re-editing my configuration files.
Am I not supposed to run etc-update?
Why did it restore all of these files to their defaults?

so did you type
Code:
etc-update

and then automatically all your files were updated or was there more user input such as
Code:

or some other code typed in?

I learned my lesson with doing emerge -u world and system when I killed my dns on my router. I still don't have the thing working.

I never do those because you can totally kill your system so easily. I usually keep an eye open for security updates and such, but never do an emerge -u world or system......

Thanks.
I will stay away from that option.

On a positive note I found the file that sets extra options on startup:
/etc/conf.d/local.start
I added "vncserver" there. Sweetness.
