Apparently Gentoo doesn't have the ability to mount ntfs partitions. When I try to mount mine, it says it does not have the NTFS module or something. Where can I find this and how do I install it?

There's an NTFS entry in your kernel configuration, under File Systems. Note that NTFS support under Linux is currently read-only, however.

there is write support also, but it's experimental, but i've tried it a bit just to test, and i had no problems with it.

From the website:

Write support had been started, but being incomplete it is extremely dangerous.

If the developers are saying it's "extremely dangerous", I wouldn't want to use it unless I had a backup.

I've read deeper into it, and the developers say something along the lines that if you use the write portion of it, you will need to perform a filesystem cleanup that might take almost forever when you go back into windows.

Basically, you can and probably will lose data :)

But, I haven't tried it yet, and that note might be old, too. (as alot of notes are.)

Dnager might be fun, unless you have something important on that partition...

Actually the developers Gave Up on the version 1.x driver (included in 2.4.18-2.4.19) and started fresh on a new 2.0.x driver (which doesn't even have tentative write support - yet.)

According to them, write operations which modified existing files usually worked, but attempts to create new files would almost certainly cause filesystem corruption. Too risky for me.

I'm using the 2.0.7 driver (ro) with no problems. It doesn't bitch about my W2K partition like the 1.x driver did either.

read all about it at http://linux-ntfs.sourceforge.net/

Thanks for the info! I'm kinda interested in this since I think NTFS is a relatively stable fs in Windows. (if there's anything stable in Windows..) Has that seemed to be everyone else's feelings as well?
